South Yarmouth - Carlton W. Hulteen (September 19, 1928) of South Yarmouth passed away peacefully at Cape Cod Hospital on August 9, 2023 surrounded by his family. He was born in Malden, MA and was the son of Gustaf Hulteen and Lilly Spongburg, both of Sweden.
Carlton is survived by his son Eric Hulteen, Eric’s daughters Brooke and Hilary, Hilary’s son Jem and daughter Memphis; his son Kurt Hulteen and his wife Linda Hulteen; his granddaughter Lindsay Hulteen; and grandson Russell Hulteen, his wife Laura Hulteen, and their sons Boden and Neil. He is preceded in death by his wife of 72 years Lilly (Lillian) Hulteen, his son Erik Anders Hulteen, and his son Neil Hulteen.
Carlton was a strong, quiet family man and a loving and devoted husband, who with Lillian, had their hands full raising an all-boy family in South Weymouth, Massachusetts. Carlton provided for the family working as an electrician, for many years with M.B. Foster Electric on projects all over New England, and ultimately with Boston Edison at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant in Plymouth, Massachusetts. He was a well-respected member of the Pilgrim team and had a very stressful but rewarding career working through the complexities of keeping a power plant running. That may explain why he delivered flowers as a retirement job helping out his nephew and partner’s flower shop in Sandwich, Massachusetts. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 103 for 70 years and was proud of that association.
Carlton served in the military and was in active service with the Army 981st Engineer Construction Battalion, Company C, from 1950 to 1952, and then served in the Army Reserve through December 1956. He enjoyed building skating rinks in the family’s large yard in South Weymouth for the Hulteen boys and all the neighbors to enjoy. He built his own flag pole out of aluminum electrical conduit and was passionate about flying the flag of the United States along with the Swedish Flag and the flags of many other states, countries, and organizations.
Carlton and Lillian were members of the Swedish Folk Dance Club of Boston for 30 years and traveled with the group performing around New England. He was very proud of his Swedish heritage and took Lillian and Kurt to Sweden for a month-long trip in 1973. He was famous for putting yellow and blue electrical tape or paint on anything he wanted people to know was his, like his work tools and his favorite wheelbarrow. Some of the family carry that tradition on today.
Carlton was active as an usher and deacon of the Old South Union Congregational Church and the First Baptist Church of Weymouth. He also volunteered countless weekends during the construction of the First Baptist Church of Weymouth, putting his electrical and general construction skills to work. He would never say no to anyone’s request for help with an electrical or other household problem.
He loved to work in their yard in Hyannis, mowing his lawn and the lawns of several of the neighbors, and designing and planting elaborate yellow daffodil patterns in the front yard. Carlton enjoyed working with wood and had assembled and enjoyed a large collection of woodworking tools for projects such as tables, benches, and even a grandfather clock.
He enjoyed bike riding, first in his younger days when he and Lillian made several long journeys on their bikes from Weymouth to Cape Cod, and then in retirement on Cape Cod when he rode extensively with a friend, who was a retired Hyannis Postman. He and Lillian enjoyed may trips to visit Kurt and Linda in Alaska, which he loved. He also loved trucks and as luck would have it, was able to ride in the cab of a tractor trailer for a 1,700 mile, 5 day trip from Anchorage to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska and back. Probably the best trip he ever took without Lillian. Carlton and Lillian spent the last six years, establishing, enjoying, and appreciating a wonderful relationship with the team at Thirwood Place Assisted Living Facility in South Yarmouth.
Relatives and friends are invited to join the family for an informal visit and reflection of Carlton and Lillian’s life at the Doane Beal & Ames Funeral Home at 160 West Main Street in Hyannis, MA 02601 from the hours of 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Tuesday August 15, 2023.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cape Cod Healthcare Foundation in Carlton’s name. We love and miss them both. They were always a team, and the team is back together again. May they rest in peace.
