CENTERVILLE - On Wednesday, July 31, Donald Chase Sr. completed his final voyage following a courageous battle with cancer.
Mr. Chase attended Yarmouth High School, and the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, later traveling the world with Moore McCormack Lines in the Merchant Marine. Mr. Chase operated the Chase Laundry in downtown Hyannis with his family.
Don was well known as a community volunteer for many years with the St. Vincent de Paul through St. Francis Xavier, as a Hyannis Fire call Captain, and with the Cape Cod Power Squadron. In 1986, the US Power Squadrons bestowed an education award on Mr. Chase for his excellence in teaching. At the time, it was the only citation awarded nationally. Following that, in 2010, he was awarded a Meritorious Service Award for 54 years of dedication to the boating public. Through the years, Don held office in the Power Squadrons on the local, District and National levels.
Don liked nothing better than to be on the water boating, first on the Cora and later the PatSea and Maricopa. He was a participant in several early Figawi races to Nantucket and also served as a hired yacht pilot up and down the eastern seaboard in his retirement. He played the violin, clarinet and mandolin to the delight of his family and friends.
Mr. Chase is survived by his wife, Patricia (Terry) Chase; sister Marjorie (Chase) Denoncourt of West Yarmouth; children Donald Chase Jr. and his wife Debra of Centerville, Timothy Chase of Virginia, Terry (Chase) Lewis and her husband Keith of Virginia, Dennis Chase of California, and Kathleen Chase-Jones and her husband Andrew of Brewster; grandchildren, Sarah, Jacob and Michael, great-grandchildren, Alana and Jordyn and numerous nieces, nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Albert and Cora.
Visitation will be Monday Aug 5, 2013 from 3pm to 5:30pm followed by a funeral service from 5:30pm to 6pm at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home on West Main Street, Hyannis.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Massachusetts Maritime Academy Scholarship Fund, Academy Drive, Buzzards Bay, MA.
