Dorothy Jean (Gorman) Manning passed on January 1, 2026. Dorothy was born September 20, 1928, and raised in the Andrew Square section of South Boston. She was the daughter of Thomas H. and Helen V. (McCarthy) Gorman and the youngest of 16 children. She made her home in Hyannis for 60 years. She died peacefully at the age of 97.
Dorothy was a wonderful homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. She did not play tennis or golf, join any clubs or have memberships, but she was very hospitable and would make a wonderful cup of tea! She had to deal with cloth diapers and making baby formula. She got her driver’s license when she was 35 and made sure her children all had library cards and knew how to swim. She loved shopping at thrift shops and rummage sales and loved visits from her grandchildren. Buttner’s, Grant’s and Angelo’s Supermarket (for her coffee) were her favorite stores.
Survived by her 9 children: Gail Manning (Alan Hebditch), Jean McNamara (Paul Trimble), Mary Ellen Manning, Eileen McQuillan (Darby), Carol Manning, Patricia Ahearn (Hugh), Robert E. Jr. (Mary Kirwin), Gerard Manning (Darlene Murray), M. Conroy Manning; 19 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Married in 1948 to her late husband Robert E. Manning, Sr., also raised in South Boston, who passed away in February 2014. Sister of the late Gladys Gorman, Helen Butchard, Mary Gorman, Thomas Gorman, Jr., Charles Gorman, John Gorman, J. Arthur Gorman, Katherine Coffey, William Gorman, Leo Gorman, Rita Earner Walsh, Alice McGonage, V. Patricia Flynn, Eleanor Brown, Robert Gorman. Also predeceased by granddaughter Leigh-Anne Manning Horne.
Heaven is now cleaner and more organized since Dorthy has passed. Dorothy will continue to shape and mold the lives of the people she cared about indefinitely. The sheer amount of people filling her hospital room the last few days are a testament to the love and beauty she created. She will be missed beyond measure, but honored every day by her loving tribe.
Calling hours will be held from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, January 7th at Doane, Beal & Ames, 160 W. Main St. in Hyannis. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday, January 8th at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory, 230 S. Main St in Centerville. Burial will follow at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Centerville.
In lieu of flowers Dorothy requested a simple act of kindness or forgiveness in memory of her loss.
