Dorothy Anne White

Dorothy (Cardarople) White, a woman of remarkable capability, boundless creativity, and deep family devotion, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2026, at the age of 93. Surrounded by the family that was her greatest pride, Dorothy left behind a legacy of love that stretched from the neighborhoods of Braintree to her beloved shores of Cummaquid.

Born on September 4, 1932, Dorothy was the youngest of eight children. A proud 1950 graduate of Braintree High School, her industrious spirit was evident early on; she fondly remembered her time with the 4H Club working with animals on Twitchell’s Farm.

Following high school, she attended Katharine Gibbs College, where she acquired the business administration skills that would define her professional life. Dorothy was a trailblazer in her career, lending her talents to Plymouth/Brockton Transportation Services, J.L. Sirocco, and Bechtel Engineering Corporation.

While Dorothy was a professional force, her true masterpiece was her home. She was a beautiful cook who delighted in hosting. Her holiday parties were legendary, characterized by open doors that welcomed her brothers and sisters, her seven children, their many friends, and neighbors alike. Dorothy believed there was always room for one more at the table.

Her creative hands were rarely still. She was a member of the Remicks Deb Fashion Council, a Camp Fire Girl Leader, an avid member of the Braintree Garden Guild, and a dedicated voice in the St. Thomas More Church Sodality and Choir.

Dorothy’s love of art was lifelong. She was always interested in drawing and painting, and her talent found its way into the heart of family life—most memorably at Christmas. One year she painted all of her children’s portraits as carolers in oil paint which she arranged around the Fireplace at our home in Braintree. She was further influenced by her friendship with Virginia Reilly; an up-and-coming Oil Painter who lived in our neighborhood. Virginia’s daughter attended dancing school with Dorothy’s oldest daughter and when Dorothy learned the girls would be dancing in The Nutcracker, the two Moms worked together making several of their costumes and took the young dancer’s photos in her rose garden. Dorothy Encouraged my sisters to take ballet and then Joyce pursued Gymnastics In our home where sisters pursued dancing and gymnastics, Dorothy’s sons expressed their own creativity. Viewing Ice Hockey on TV was a popular family event with all four of her sons playing and their dad coaching. The 3 youngest boys are musically gifted with the Guitar and her youngest son is an accomplished rock drummer who plays live music with his band. Dorothy’s encouragement helped each child feel seen and supported. Later, she continued learning and creating, taking art classes with her daughter Kathleen, and attending the Barnstable Senior Center’s Intermediate Acrylic Painting Class. She was also a devoted supporter of her daughter’s involvement with the Art Galleries where she exhibited and taught classes. Dorothy loved attending meetings and taking part in the Yarmouth Art Guild’s monthly gatherings, where guest artists shared demonstrations. Dorothy loved being out in the community, including Christmas parties at Yarmouth House, and these connections became a meaningful and sustaining part of her life.

In 2007, Dorothy retired to the family home in Cummaquid, where she embraced the beauty of Cape Cod. She spent her retirement traveling, taking quiet swims at the beach, and dancing to the Big Band sound with her beloved beau, Joe. On many afternoons, she could be found contentedly sunning herself on her porch, taking in the beautiful view she so dearly loved.

Dorothy loved spending time with her family more than anything. She shared 40 years of marriage with her adoring husband, Frank White. Though she lost Frank far too young, she was later blessed with a long and happy companionship with Joseph Varasso (deceased), embracing his three children and their families as her own.

Dorothy was the last of her siblings to be called home, joining Grace Venuti, Philip Cardarople, Anthony Cardarople (US Army KIA WWII), George Cardarople, Winifred Carleton, Vera Cardarople, and Margherite Cardarople.

She is survived by her children:

● David White and spouse Laurel

Mother of the late Paul White who was married to the late Suzanne. She is additionally survived by many nieces and nephews, and her cherished companion, Amorico (Cookie), her green-eyed tuxedo cat, who she loved as her eighth child.

She also leaves behind 12 grandchildren: Sarah White, Katrina Hathaway (Michael), Karoline Brown (Michael McCoy), Jonathan McCurdy (Alina), Noelle White (Jon Loembrono), Elizabeth Nolan (Mathew), Jacob White, Justin White, William McCurdy, Lee Luker (Meghan Grieve), Jeff Luker (Emily Bahr-DiStafano), and Alex Guedouar (Natasha Bedoya-Ross); and 6 great-grandchildren: Vanessa, Ella and Hazel, Theodore, Freya, and George.

Visitation on Friday, May 1, 2026 from 9-10:15 AM at the Doane, Beal, & Ames Funeral Home, 160 West Main St., Hyannis to be followed by her Mass of Christian Burial in the Sacred Heart Chapel, Yarmouth Port at 11:00 AM.

Dorothy’s life was marked by a steady devotion to family, a generous spirit, and a creative gift that brought beauty to those around her. Her presence was quietly inspirational—encouraging others not by grand declarations, but by the consistent way she showed up, supported, and gave of herself. Dorothy’s enduring hope, expressed simply and lived faithfully, was this: a Mom you would like to see her children follow their dreams and be the best they could be. In that wish—and in the generous, creative, and talented life that carried it—Dorothy leaves a legacy that will continue to guide and inspire all who loved her.
