OBITUARY

Edythe F. Gingerich

January 24, 1931June 25, 2020

Edythe Ferns Gingerich, of Cummaquid, MA, passed away unexpectedly in her home on Thursday, June 25, 2020. She was 89 and had lived a long and happy life full of love for family, friends, and humankind.

Edythe grew up in Baldwin, NY, graduated from Bucknell University with a degree in education, and then settled in Westfield, NJ, to raise her four children before retiring to the Cape in 1992. She was a life-long educator as an elementary school teacher and through her indefatigable volunteering with the Girl Scouts; Westfield Presbyterian Church; and, more recently, South Congregational Church in Centerville. She was an inspiration to all she knew and impacted countless lives with her unfailing compassion, generosity, and integrity.

Edythe leaves behind her beloved husband of 68 years, William, along with four children and their spouses, Kathryn and Mark of West Barnstable; Barbara of Portland, Jamaica; William and Laura of Whispering Pines, NC; and Christine and Doug of Sherborn, MA as well as 9 grandchildren (Elizabeth, William, Todd, Monique, Bryan, Dylan, Isabelle, Louis, and Annie) and one great grandchild (James). One of her greatest joys was hosting over 50 years of family reunions at the Gingerich summer home on Lake Wequaquet. Her spirit will forever be present in the bonds among the grandchildren and the lasting memories they share of times spent at the lake. Many nieces, nephews, and friends also enjoyed years of Edythe’s warm welcome and endless kind-heartedness.

Dear Bill & family, I am so sad to hear of Edythe’s passing. The church and thrift shop will never be the same again without her creative presence. She will be remembered warmly by us all.
God bless you and give you strength during this difficult time.
Peace, Carol Torbey
