It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Elaine “Nina” Frances Burnham Buckler, 94, at home in Centerville on June 21, 2022 surrounded by love from her family. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and sister. Elaine Frances Burnham Buckler was born on May 24, 1928, the oldest child of Harold and Irene Burnham and lived and loved her whole life on Cape Cod. She graduated from Barnstable High School in 1946 and married Charlie Buckler in 1949. Together they built a life together surrounded by family and friends.
In her early adult years, Elaine worked at HP Hood, Barnstable County Bank, and then became a homemaker and community volunteer. She loved to read, solve crossword puzzles, tend her flower garden, and was a skilled knitter and seamstress, making sweaters and clothing for her children and grandchildren. She was passionate about politics and remained concerned about the future of this country until her death. She was a loving, caring person who made everyone feel comfortable and welcomed. Elaine had an amazing group of lifelong friends who regularly got together for fun and laughs and to share in life’s milestones. They called themselves the Tuesday Tooters.
Summer was Elaine’s season. She loved everything about summer-the warmth of the sun, the flowers in her window boxes and in her yard, the summer menus, and the beach. She made prize worthy fruit pies. She spent countless memorable summers at CBA with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and her close group of friends.
Nina is survived by her adoring husband of more than 73 years, Charlie Buckler, her four wonderful children Sue Herman (Bruce), Gary Buckler (Karen) Jean Planert (Tom), and Bruce Buckler (Patty Chadwick). Nina’s biggest thrill in life was showing her adoring eleven grandchildren unconditional love. She is survived by Abigail Buckler, Aaron Buckler, David Herman, Nathan Buckler, Ben Planert, Leslie Buckler, Susie Pescosolido, Matthew Herman, Alex Buckler, Mae Planert, and Zachary Buckler. She is also survived by Eva Herman, Miles Herman, Charlie Pescosolido, Cullen Buckler, and Teddy Pescosolido, her great grandchildren and her brother James Burnham. She was preceded in death by her sister Betty Lockhart.
Nina meant the world to all of her grandchildren. You see, that’s what made her so special, she had a way to make each grandchild feel like she’d been waiting all day to see them and until then her day wasn’t complete. She spent her summers spoiling her grandchildren at her beloved CBA soaking in the sun, watching the grandkids swim, and sneaking money into their hands to get a treat at the snack bar. One of her grandchildren described summer at Nina’s house as Utopia. She didn’t blink an eye when her whole family piled into her home making a mess opening gifts on Christmas or pouring out their candy from their Easter eggs, after a competitive hunt. She spent her winters making sure her grandkids could play hooky from school to indulge in a cup of clam chowder at the Hearth and Kettle. She made sure on snow days to have the sleds ready, and when it was time to come inside, warm chocolate chip cookies and hot chocolate were waiting. Nina was a hero to her grandchildren because she made all of us feel so loved and special. We will miss her more than words can express. We love you Nina.
