
Eleanor G. Gouger, 92, of South Yarmouth, died peacefully on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017. Eleanor was born in New York on November 9, 1924. She was quickly adopted by the late Charles D. and Frances (Dodd) Gatslick of North Adams who she adored.
Ellie was a graduate of Drury High School in North Adams. In her youth she was active in Girl Scouts and spent many summers horseback riding and swimming at Camp Bonnie Brae. She also enjoyed her father’s summer camp in Pownal, VT.
She attended the University of Massachusetts and Katherine Gibbs School in Boston.
Ellie married Carroll A. “Pete” Gouger in August of 1946, and moved to Newton Center, MA where she worked as a private secretary for the Dedham Country Day School.
They lived in Milford, CT and Andover, MA before moving to Cape Cod in 1974.
Ellie was an active member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Barnstable Village, serving on the Altar Guild and Episcopal Church Women’s Society. She and Pete were very active and committed to the Cape Irish Children’s program, bringing together youths of troubled Northern Ireland.
Ellie enjoyed reading, knitting and playing Bridge. She liked to travel and would have periodic long weekends with her high school chums affectionately known as the “knitwits.”
Eleanor is survived by her husband Carroll A “Pete” Gouger, her two sons and wives, Charles A. and Amy Gouger of W. Barnstable, and William R. and Tracy Gouger of Castle Rock, CO., three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at a later date at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Barnstable Village. Memorial Contributions may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104 or to St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 3055 Main St., Barnstable Village, MA 02630.
