A few more memories from Harvard Kennedy School:
What a sad loss. She was a wonderful person and centrally important to helping HKS become what it is today. I am not surprised to see that she was quite a force in so many institutions. Thank you for sharing this tragic news.
- David Ellwood, former HKS Dean
I will always remember as a relatively young and inexperienced faculty member being asked to join the State and Local Senior Executive program under Liz Nill and Marc Roberts. Marc taught me how to case teach and Liz how to be firm but gracious, inviting the participants into her home. Liz was a pillar of the Executive Programs and I feel honored and grateful to have worked with her.
- Tony Gomez-Ibanez, faculty
“Liz was indeed a remarkable person in many ways who contributed a lot to the development of Exec Ed when it was in its HKS infancy. She was also a good friend and lively conversationalist. Her dedication to the State and Local program in particular was deep and was critical in helping it become the force it has been and remains. She did indeed leave us way too early.”
- Arn Howitt, senior staff
What a sad moment and great loss. I remember Liz as a positive force of nature. I absorbed a raft of life lessons from her and from Marc Roberts about how to organize, energize, and operate executive programs for the benefit of all involved — the participants, the faculty, the staff, and the School. And so many things beyond the programs themselves ... lessons about how to lead a committed and purposeful life. Both Liz and Marc have left us far too soon.
Up to us now to keep carrying forward her great legacy and all of the things we learned from and with her. Cycle of generations — the day Pete sent this email was my daughter’s wedding day.

I hope the attached remembrances of Liz Nill from her colleagues at Harvard Kennedy School bring her family members some comfort. I didn’t have the opportunity to work with Liz myself, but today Pete Zimmerman shared the news of her death over Harvard email, and I was very moved by the outpouring of admiration and affection from many who knew her well. Our warmest condolences to you all.
- Debra Iles, Dean of Harvard Kennedy School Executive Education
In the 1980's and early 90's Liz was the driving force behind the growth & success of the State & Local exec program and later worked with Holly Sargent in Development. Liz was a vital and creative force for fifteen years with us contributing in a hundred ways.
- Pete Zimmerman, member of the faculty and former Dean of Exec Ed
Liz and I have been in touch these last months. As you may know, she approached all of this characteristically with her grace, simplicity, decision, and elegance. We were all blessed to work with her.
- Ronnie Heifetz, faculty
Yes, we were blessed to work with her. She provided so much of the inspiration and confidence, as well as the assured technical skills, that were required to make a pretty risky operation a success. It makes me sad to think of this wholly beneficial energy departing the current scene. Thanks to Pete and Ronnie for staying close to her and reminding her of our love and high regard.
- Mark Moore, faculty
We were all fortunate to work with her as she build a State and Local venture of which we’re all proud.
- Graham Allison, former HKS
