

The son of the late Joseph and Vincenza Chaplen, Fred, was born in Brooklyn, NY, where he grew to love the Brooklyn Dodgers. His family moved to Connecticut in the 1940’s where he had many happy memories working on the family farm. Fred loved sports, especially baseball, basketball, and bowling. Following high school he joined the US Navy. He spent 3 years traveling around the world where he developed a special fondness for the Scandinavian countries.
After his honorable discharge, he met the love of his life, Mary Ann Nycz. They enjoyed nearly 70 years of married life. Fred graduated from the University of Connecticut with a business degree. He had a long career at Aetna Life and Casualty in Hartford, Connecticut. The greatest joy of his life was raising his three daughters Dawn Donovan, Laurie Lopez and Michele Chaplen. Fred and Mary Ann spent many happy years together in Farmington, CT, Fitzwilliam, NH and Dennis, MA. He was also blessed with 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Fred was predeceased by his sisters Frances Kammerer and Marie Jarvis. He is survived by his adored wife Mary Ann (Nycz) Chaplen, his loving daughters, Dawn C. Donovan, Laurie C. Lopez, Michele Chaplen and his cherished grandchildren Erin Ray, Paul Donovan, Alan Donovan, Glen Donovan, Christopher Lopez, Hector Lopez and 7 great grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in Fred’s honor at Our Lady of the Cape Catholic Church, 468 Stony Brook Rd. Brewster, MA on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at 11:00 am.
