George W. Allison

W. Yarmouth – George W. Allison, 90, died December 6, 2010. Born in New York City, he was raised and educated in the Bronx, N.Y.. Following graduation from high School, he secured a position with AT&T, the company he would work for throughout his 40 year career. George was proud to have played a role in the launch of TELSTAR, the first communications satellite. He was involved in communications for the Strategic Air Command facility in Amherst, Mass. He served proudly in the U.S. Army during both WWII and again during the Korean conflict. His service began on October 9th 1941 in Hartford CT and he began active duty on the 17th of December 1942. He served as an instructor of communications at F.A.R.T.C School, Fort Bragg NC from March 1943 to March 1944. George served in the European Theatre: February 1945 – February 1946 as a Communications Officer (from April 1944 to February 1946). He served in the Korean Theatre from September 1950 to June 1952 as a Communications Officer. A job transfer brought him to the Springfield Mass area during which time he lived in Wilbraham. He retired in 1976 and there met his second wife Gertrude. They were married in 1978. Since 1984 they have resided in W. Yarmouth. During his retirement years, George was extremely active in the Federated Church in Hyannis. He was also an avid reader George was predeceased by his sisters Katherine Mary Allison and Madeline Allison. He is survived by his wife Gertrude of 32 years as well as two sons from his first marriage to Amelia, Christopher Allison of Amherst Mass and Geoff Allison of N.Y., N.Y.. He also leaves two grandchildren, Seth Allison of Amherst and Scott Allison of Watertown, Mass. He is also survived by his brother in law Wilbur Cole and his wife, Dorothy and Mrs. Martha Cole of Three Rivers, Mass., as well as many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at the Federated Church of Hyannis on Saturday December 18, 2010 at 11am.
