Beloved husband of 60 years to the late Patricia Mitchell. Loving father of Gerald P. Mitchell Jr of Westwood, Andria Mitchell Connors, her husband John of Norwood, Jane Mitchell Quinn and her husband Mike of Brewster, formerly of Newton. Proud, beloved and devoted grandfather (Bubba) of Peter and Nola Quinn. Jerry is survived by his brother Norman Mitchell of Dedham and predeceased by his brothers, Albert and Kenneth Mitchell.
Jerry was born and raised in Boston (Roxbury). He was the son of the late Albert Mitchell and Mary Mahoney Mitchell. He was a graduate of Boston College High School (‘54 ) and Boston College (‘58) where he met the love of his life, Pat Richards. Jerry taught at BC High School for four years (‘58-‘61). He was also a champion boxer, becoming the intercollegiate heavyweight boxing champion of New England. He twice won the Golden Gloves Championship while attending college and the National Guard. Jerry served in the Army National Guard, rising to the rank of Captain. He was a champion marksman and won many competitions while on the rifle team with the National Guard. Not bad for a poor, resilient young man from Roxbury who lost his father at a young age and endured a challenging childhood. Spiritual faith is what helped propel him throughout his life. Jerry went on to lead a very successful youth program for high school students under St Margaret Mary Parish, Westwood. He was awarded for his years of dedication to Catholic youth mentorship by the late Mayor of Boston, Thomas Menino. Jerry went on to work for an envelope manufacturing company, which he purchased and led for the remainder of his career. Jerry was known for his honesty and meticulous detail. He treasured and respected the employees of his firm. His golden years brought him precious time, fun and laughter with his two beloved grandchildren. He was their “Bubba” and did all that he could to be perpetually present for them, while always providing chocolate. He was affectionately deemed the “Outstanding Grampa” on the sidelines of their sporting years. With age taxing his energy, he remained a voracious reader, lover of classical music and beachside reflection. He was the best father, grandparent, mentor and provider, blessing the lives of so many with unending generosity and love. He built a wonderful legacy for his family and we will miss him beyond words.
A wake will be held on Monday, November 18th, 3-6 PM at Doane Beal and Ames Funeral Home, 160 W. Main St, Hyannis MA.
