CENTERVILLE- Helen E. (Kahelin) Gilchrist, 85, died peacefully on Thursday, October 25, 2018 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late Frank E. Gilchrist until his passing in October of last year.

Born and raised in Centerville, she was the daughter of the late Aate and Annie Kahelin. Helen was a graduate of Barnstable High School with the class of 1950 where she participated in various sports and activities.

Upon graduating from high school, Helen worked for New England Telephone Co. where she was a Supervisor. It was during her time spent working there that she met her husband, Frank.

Helen and Frank were married in 1955 at South Congregational Church in Centerville. They then went on to raise their four children in Centerville.

In her spare time, Helen found enjoyment in reading, baking, sewing and knitting. She liked to spend time outdoors whether it was swimming at the beach, relaxing by the lake, or camping with her husband.

Helen loved to travel around New England, to Florida and the Caribbean. She and Frank took two cross country trips, visiting all corners of the United States. Helen was a proud member of the Finnish-American Society of Cape Cod.

She is survived and will be deeply missed by her four children, Jodie Hodsdon (Bill) of Hyannis; James Gilchrist (Susan) of Centerville, Karen M., and Gwen Gilchrist Stanton (William) of Belmont; and a brother, Robert Kahelin of Osterville and Fort Myers, FL; as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Helen was predeceased by her sister in law, Georgia Kahelin.

Gwen,
I was so sorry to hear of your moms passing. It is never easy to say goodbye, but at least it's only goodbye for now. I hope you can take some solace in knowing that your mom and dad are together again, and watching over all of you.
Much love and prayers for you and your family,

Dear Jodi, Karen, Jim & Gwen,

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your Mom.

It only seems like yesterday, when we were kids and would all gather at the Gilchrist home to watch and participate in the Memorial Day Parade, each year. Afterwards your Mom and Dad would have a cookout, and your Mom would organize a bunch of games for us. She was the person that taught me how to throw a Frisbee.....Now that took a lot of patience on her behalf!

I love you, Aunt Helen!

Jodi, Karen, Jim & Gwen........Your Mom is with your Dad now. Both are proud as heck of all of you and are smiling!
