Herbert W. Ahrens, 84, of West Yarmouth, formerly of Wellesley and Osterville, passed away on March 7. He was the beloved husband of Joan (Gaddy) Ahrens for 61 years. He was born on October 22, 1933 in Hackensack, New Jersey, the son of the late Willis and Violet Ahrens of Glen Rock, New Jersey. He graduated from Ridgewood High School, class of 1951 and then went on to graduate from Princeton University in 1955 with a degree in chemical engineering. He was a member of Tower Club. After graduating from Princeton, he served as an aviator in the U.S. Navy. He received his Masters in Business Administration from Babson College. He also attended the Penn. State Executive Management Program.
Herb worked for Polaroid for 30 years and retired as divisional vice president in 1994. He managed Polaroid manufacturing operations in Russia, China and India and was active in projects in Latin America and in the Asia/Pacific region.
In addition to his wife, Herb is survived by his three children - Glenn Scott Ahrens and his wife Donna, Craig Nelson Ahrens and his wife Susan and his daughter Laura J. Ahrens. He is also survived by his four grandchildren who have given him great pleasure in his life - Andrew, Christina, Ryan and Connor.
Herb loved to garden. He also enjoyed flying, sailing and playing golf. He was involved in several community activities including serving as trustee of the Waltham/Weston Hospital, President of the Waltham/Weston Suburban Chamber of Commerce and President of the Board of Directors of the Charles River Museum.
A Service of Celebration of Herb's Life will be held on Wednesday, March 14th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Osterville. Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 15th at the Waterside Cemetery in Marblehead. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
