

Throughout his life, John distinguished himself as a devoted husband, son, brother, friend, and outstanding role model for his niece, nephews, and children of his friends and family.
John strove for excellence and order in everything he did as well as in his own life-- first as an Eagle Scout, then as an ROTC student at Northeastern University, where he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, and as a Captain in the Intelligence Unit of The United States Army during the Vietnam War era.
John led by example. He was a respected Human Resources executive at several large corporations including St. Regis Paper Company, Rockwell International, Thom McAn, Melville Corporation and U Mass Medical. He also consulted on labor relations issues for Mobil Oil and recently served as Director of Personnel for the Town of Falmouth. Throughout his life, John’s passion was his love and respect for his family, friends, the outdoors, nature and country.
Born in Worcester in 1947 to Joseph Martis and Helen (Novak) Martis, the family moved to Framingham where John attended Framingham schools. Following college and the military, John obtained his M.B.A. from Clark University and spent the early years of his professional career at Rockwell International, where he met his wife and best friend, Gail, of 36 years.
In addition to his wife Gail Germain Martis and sister, Joan Martis, John leaves his niece, Karen Germain; his nephews, Brian Germain and Brandon Germain; his great nephew, Austin Slack; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Peter Germain and Shirley (Walker) Germain, and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. John was preceded in death by his parents.
Family and friends will be received at the Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home at 160 West Main Street, Hyannis, MA 02601 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Sunday, October 23rd. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, October 24th, at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of the Assumption at 76 Wianno Avenue, Osterville, MA 02655. Interment to follow at The National Cemetery in Bourne, MA.
