

Karen was born June 16, 1948 in Barrington, RI to Isabel and Kenneth Newberg. She was the oldest of 5 children.
Karen graduated Barrington High School and went on to receive a fashion degree from Rhode Island Junior College. Karen was a buyer for Cherry and Webb. She often went on buying trips to New York City. She married Owen Hickey in May of 1974. Karen gave up her career as a buyer to move to Cape Cod in 1974 to follow her husband's dream of becoming a pilot. What she thought was a short term job at Filene's turned into over a 30 year career. She was a top sales in the shoe department for multiple years. Customers often learned Karen's schedule and would come in to have her wait on them. Karen had a passion for golf and was a long time member of Cummaquid golf course. She was involved in charity golf tournaments and helped raise money for Cape Cod Hospital. Karen found joy in being outdoors. She loved running, golfing, and going for walks. She loved to travel. She and Owen took many extraordinary trips. She golfed St. Andrew's, kissed the Blarney Stone, walked the beaches of Normandy, and had many more adventures. Anther passion of Karen's was gardening. She loved planting and watching her flowers bloom. She always had one of the most beautiful yards in her neighborhoods.
Karen's biggest passion was her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, and nana to her family. She adored her daughter Megan Sabatinelli and her husband Eric. The loves of her life were her grandchildren Ryan and Aidan. Her grandchildren could often be found at her house on Friday nights. She would call during the week to get their dinner order for the sleepover. On one vacation to Disney World the "Nana rule" went into effect. The rule is ice cream especially a Mickey Mouse bar is acceptable for breakfast. That rule is still in effect.
Karen is survived by her daughter Megan Sabatinelli and her husband Eric. Her beloved grandchildren Ryan and Aidan Sabatinelli. Her sister Kristen Stratford, brothers Kenneth Newberg and Douglas Newberg. She is predeceased by her beloved husband Owen Hickey, her sister Deborah Shallcross, and her parents Kenneth and Isabel Newberg.
Visitation will be held at the Doane Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 160 W Main St, Hyannis, Massachusetts 02601, on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, from 9:30 am to 10:30 am to be followed by her Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Victory Church, 230 S Main St, Centerville at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at Cummaquid Cemetery, Mary Dunn Rd., Cummaquid.
