South Yarmouth, MA
Kieran J. Horan, 90, of South Yarmouth, MA died on October 3rd at his home where he succumbed to cancer. He was predeceased by his wife, Shirlee Wakefield Horan, in November, 2009.
Kieran is survived by his two daughters, Pamela Horan-Kates and her husband John of Edwards, Colorado, and Sheila Wakefield Horan of Centerville, MA; his grandchildren Conor and Brooke Horan-Kates, also of Colorado; his sister Kathleen Horan Coffey of Simsbury, Connecticut; and a large number of admiring nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his third daughter, Justine Anne, in 1966.
Kieran was born in Hartford, CT, to Katherine O’Connell Horan and Thomas Horan, a well known and loved Hartford fire captain. He graduated from St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield, CT and Hillyer Business College. He served with the Army during World War II in the United States and in France.
Kieran was a man of great personality and humor which ideally suited him for a career in sales. He was a district sales manager for both Packard and Chevrolet Motor Division for many years and thoroughly enjoyed his profession.
He was an amateur actor and for many years he was an enthusiastic mainstay in the Simsbury (CT) Theatre Guild. His self described favorite role was as “Big Julie” in Guys and Dolls.
In their retirement, Kieran and Shirlee moved to Bradenton, Florida, again thoroughly enjoying and appreciating their life there. They relocated to Cape Cod in 2008, which was a place that held fond memories for both of them.
Kieran was known as a raconteur and humorist extraordinaire, who delighted his family, friends and colleagues with his oftentimes outrageous and hilarious stories and comments. He was also a gentleman to the core and for this he will be remembered.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, Simsbury on Friday, October 8th at 1:30pm. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers and for those who wish to honor Kieran, gifts may be forwarded to Hospice and Palliative Care of Cape Cod, 765 Attucks Lane, Hyannis, MA 02601, who so wonderfully cared for Kieran during his illness. In addition, our family appreciation is boundless for the caring staff at Thirwood Place who, to a person, are true and kind professionals.
