Konstantinos "Kostas" Mitrokostas, 90, of South Yarmouth, MA died peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, September 5, 2018. He would have celebrated 50 years of marriage in December to his adored wife Frederika (Skamnelou) Mitrokostas.
Kostas was born in Anatoliki-Krapsi, Greece, the son of the late Nikolaos and Panagiota (Karaferi) Mitrokostas. In view of the dire economic circumstances in Greece following World War II and the Greek Civil War, Kostas immigrated to the United States in 1956 at the age of 28 without a penny in his pocket. He settled in Worcester, MA, where he worked ironing clothing for the Newton Sportswear Company. In the early 1960s, together with his sister and brother-in-law, Kostas opened "B&M Pizza" in the Harvard Square section of Cambridge. Kostas operated B&M until 1968, when he decided to move to Cape Cod with his wife to join his dear Aunt Frances (Mitrokostas) Haidas and Uncle Van Haidas in owning and operating the "Kream 'N Kone Restaurant" in Dennisport. In 1978, Kostas opened a second Kream 'N Kone location in Chatham. Together with his wife, Kostas owned and operated both restaurants for 30 years until he retired in 1998. In 2004, Kostas came out of retirement to open yet another business, the "Original Seafood Restaurant" in Dennisport.
Although Kostas had a successful career in the restaurant business and in real estate, family was most important to him. He worked hard to help his parents and family in Greece and to send his three children to college and law school. During his life and in his retirement, what Kostas enjoyed most was spending time with his loving wife, his children and their families at the home that he built on Bass River in South Yarmouth. His nine grandchildren were the pride and joy of his life, and he would light up every time he saw them. He will be sorely missed by his family, who were blessed to have him as a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and role model.
In addition to his beloved wife Frederika, Kostas is survived by his three loving children, Frances Barrett and her husband Andrew of Milton, MA; Alexandra Chakalis and her husband John of Newton, MA; and son Nicholas Mitrokostas and his wife Claire of Newton, MA; his nine cherished grandchildren, Katharine, Christopher and Victoria Barrett; Evangeline, George and Kostandinos Chakalis; and Constantine, Grace and Alexios Mitrokostas; his siblings, Socrates Mitrokostas and his wife Nancy of South Yarmouth, MA; Demetrios Mitrokostas and his wife Persephone of Athens, Greece; sister Liberty Bolanos of Waltham, MA; and sister Ifigenia Papagiannis of Watertown, MA; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sister Vaioula Dekolis of Baldouma, Greece; his brother Christophoros Mitrokostas of Ioannina, Greece; and by his young sister Sophia Mitrokostas, as well as his brothers-in-law, Kimon Bolanos and John Papagiannis.
