Born on June 9, 1939, he was a son of the late John and Dionysia Joakim. Upon graduating from Barnstable High School, Nicholas went on to proudly serve his country as a member of the US Army. He met and maintained many wonderful friendships with his service buddies.
Prior to his retirement, Nicholas and his brother Jack owned and operated the Mayflower Restaurant and Priscilla Alden Dining Room which became John’s Loft and Sophie’s. The restaurant was previously owned by his father, his uncle, and his godfather and was purchased by John and Jack Joakim in 1965. He spent many wonderful years operating Wonder Mountain Miniature Golf Course in Wells, ME with his brother Jack and son Andrew. Nicholas especially enjoyed working with young people.
Nicholas was a member of the Cummaquid Golf Club, and was an avid fan of Boston Sports, particularly the Celtics, Red Sox and Patriots. Throughout the years, Nicholas played an instrumental role in coordinating the various reunions for the Barnstable High School Class of 1957.
Nicholas will always be remembered for his caring and generous nature. He always had a kind word for anyone he spoke with and would often say “God Bless you.” Nicholas was always willing to help those in need, even if they were a complete stranger.
In addition to his wife, Nicholas is survived and will be deeply missed by his children, John N. Joakim and his wife Susan, Andrew N. Joakim and his wife Sarah, Dionne Tarr and her husband Douglas, Georgenne Foley and her husband Dennis; Grandchildren, Sophia LaMarre and her husband Elliott, Elisabeth, Nicolette, Lily, Sophie, and Niko Joakim, Nikki Owens and her husband Isaac, Robert, Maria, and John Conway, and Nicholas and Hayden Foley; as well as a brother, Jack Joakim, and many nieces and nephews.
Nicholas was predeceased by his sisters, Seva Zervanos and Presbytera Mary Baglaneas.
Nicholas’ family would like to thank Dr. Weber and the staff of Broad Reach Hospice for the compassion and care they showed him.
