Paul V. Thompson Jr., 76, of Hyannis, Massachusetts, passed away July 20, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of service, compassion, and unwavering dedication to his family and community. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1949 to the late Sadie Evelyn Thompson and Paul V. Thompson Sr., Paul lived a life defined by love, purpose, and a deep commitment to helping others.

Paul began his professional journey as a social worker and sickle cell anemia counselor, dedicating himself early on to supporting individuals and families in need. He later found his true calling in education. A proud graduate of the Boston Public Schools, Paul returned to the district as a teacher, where he devoted his career to inspiring and empowering generations of students. Known for his wisdom, patience, and unwavering belief in every child's potential, he left a lasting impression on countless young lives. Beyond the classroom, Paul co-founded the South End Women's Heritage Trail, helping to preserve and celebrate the stories and contributions of remarkable women whose legacies continue to inspire future generations.

Paul's passion for justice and equality extended far beyond the classroom. A respected community activist in Hyannis, he served on the Steering Committee of No Place for Hate, was a member and former President of the Barnstable County Human Rights Advisory Commission, and most recently served as Vice President of the Cape Cod Chapter of the NAACP. His lifelong advocacy reflected his steadfast belief in fairness, dignity, and opportunity for all. Through his work in education and community service, Paul devoted his life to uplifting others and creating meaningful change.

One of the greatest blessings of Paul's life was his enduring love story with his beloved wife, Nancy Thompson. Their journey began as infants in neighboring baby strollers, blossomed into a childhood friendship, and by the age of twelve they had begun dating. Together they built a remarkable life and shared 58 years of marriage, creating a family rooted in love, faith, and devotion.

Paul was the proud and loving father of Raia Thompson, Paul V. Thompson III, and Nancy Magny (Brice Magny). He cherished his role as "Papa" to his beloved grandchildren, Ayanna Warfield and Nia Magny, whose lives brought him immeasurable joy.

He is also lovingly remembered by his sisters, Evelyn Thompson, Beatrice Brown (Marcus Brown), and Eileen Buggs (Clarence Buggs); his godson/nephew, Matthew Brown and goddaughter/niece Gayle Michelle Adams; his nieces and nephews, Irving Crichlow Jr., James Crichlow Sr., David Crichlow (Keisha Crichlow), Lisa Thompson, Cindy Acha, Eleanor Guilford, Nathan Thompson, Jason Thompson, Marcus Brown, and Chanise Escobar (Jean Escobar); his Uncle Bobby, Robert Thompson, patriarch of the Thompson family; his brothers-in-law, Irving Crichlow Sr. and George Guilford Jr.; his cousin, Harriet Thompson, who affectionately referred to Paul as her "first best friend"; and many beloved Thompson and Berry cousins, and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Alice Marie Crichlow; his brothers-in-law James Lovett, and Donald Guilford.

Outside of his professional and community work, Paul embraced life with enthusiasm. He loved traveling to Disney World as a devoted Disney Vacation Club member, spending treasured time with his family, cooking meals that brought everyone together, listening to music, and enjoying the well-earned pleasures of retirement. His warm smile, generous spirit, and welcoming presence made everyone feel like family.

Faith was a guiding force throughout Paul's life. One of his most cherished memories was being baptized alongside his beloved wife, Nancy, an experience that strengthened the spiritual foundation they shared throughout their marriage.

Paul will be remembered for his kindness, strength, wisdom, unwavering integrity, and boundless love for his family and community. His legacy lives on not only in those who knew and loved him but also in the countless lives he touched through his teaching, advocacy, mentorship, and friendship. He leaves behind a powerful example of what it means to live with purpose, serve others selflessly, and love deeply.

A memorial service celebrating Paul's life will be held in September 2026. Additional details will be announced as they become available.
