Robert F. “Bob” Fougere, 89, of Swampscott and formerly of Framingham and Centerville, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Tuesday, April 29.
Bob was born on July 24, 1935, in Sutton to Francis and Mary (Wilkinson) Fougere, who preceded him in death. He grew up in East Douglas, graduating from Douglas High School (1953) and Worcester State University (1958). In 1962 he married Barbara (Dore) Fougere of Uxbridge, with whom he enjoyed 62 years of marriage, and who survives him. From their union, Bob and Barbara have three children and seven grandchildren. He is also survived by a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Fougere, her partner Vikki Lenhart, and her children Lucy and Will Fougere of Cape Elizabeth, Maine; a son, John Fougere, his wife Sara and sons Drew, Grant and Luke Fougere, of Columbia, Missouri; and a son, David Fougere, his husband Patrick and sons Nicholas and Joseph Cassidy-Fougere of Swampscott.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by one sister, Barbara (Fougere) Scully, in 2023.
Bob was a dedicated junior high school Mathematics teacher for 38 years, 35 of which were spent in the town of Framingham, where Bob and Barb raised their family and built their life. He was the best husband, father, grandfather, teacher, coach and friend anyone could have asked for, faithfully married to the love of his life Barbara for decades and always fully involved in his children’s lives. Deeply committed to his Catholic faith, Bob later found great joy teaching an additional 12 years at St. Francis Xavier Prep School (now St. John Paul II School) in Hyannis, where he and Barbara enjoyed an idyllic 20 years living on Cape Cod following his retirement from the Framingham Public Schools in 1997. At the time of his death, he was a parishioner at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Marblehead. He was also proud of his service to his country, serving in the United States Naval Reserve and United States Coast Guard Reserve, retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
Bob was passionate about education, whether it was teaching Algebra or coaching countless Math and sports teams, touching the lives of generations of young students. Incredibly intelligent and witty, he was blessed with a wicked sense of humor and a lifelong love of learning; one of his favorite pastimes was curling up with a history book, of which he read hundreds (thousands?) in his lifetime. He loved to spoil his grandkids, talk about his favorite movies, discuss the figures in history that so captivated him, was a master of all kinds of trivia, and enjoyed spending time in nature and with his dogs, especially his Golden Retriever Callie. In later years, he was thrilled to travel the world, journeying to France, England, Germany, Italy and his beloved Shediac, New Brunswick, Canada, homeland of his father Francis Fougere. And he dearly loved his Boston sports teams, especially the New England Patriots, who thrilled him to no end by transforming from doormat to dynasty during his lifetime.
We will miss our beloved husband, dad and grandpa immeasurably. The world was a better place with him in it.
“For now you have sorrow, but I will see you again and your heart will rejoice”
