

BARNSTABLE—Roy Bryson Stewart Jr. passed away on Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at the Mary McCarthy House. Born in Boston on September 22, 1927. He was the son of Dr. Roy Bryson and Marjorie (Ross) Stewart. He attended Boston Schools, Boston English High and graduated from the New Hampton School, New Hampton, NH. in 1945. While there, he not only excelled in the academics but was a four letter athlete receiving the highest athletic award bestowed to a graduate. He then enlisted in the United States Navy. Seven months after an honorable discharge from the United States Navy, he was drafted during the Korean War Conflict into the United States Army receiving an honarable discharge in 1952. After his military duties,he commenced work with New England Tel and Tel in the Boston (Brighton) and Newton area. Upon retirement,he and his wife,Cathy, settled on Cape Cod ,where from his early years he had summered in Barnstable . During his teen years he worked on the Bowles/Lowell Farm and for several years enjoyed the waters of Cape Cod Bay while working out of Barnstable Harbor with the commercial fishing fleet.
He was predeceased by his parents Dr. and Mrs. Roy B. Stewart and his wife Catherine (Kitterick) Ryan. He is survived by a sister, Jean Stewart Hilton of Yarmouth Port /Barnstable and Irving R. and Robert D. Stewart of Barnstable. He always cherished and enjoyed the company of his 5 nephews and 4 nieces, along with 22 great nieces and nephews. He is also survived by three step-sons and their families, James Ryan of Montpelier, VT. ,Robert Ryan of Boston MA. and William Ryan of Keene, NH .
In whichever locale he was at the time, Roy (a.k.a. Bud, Digger or Budski) reached out to an extended family of many friends for whom he was grateful , each becoming a meaningful part of his life. The family is grateful to the staff at the Pavilion and Hope Hospice for the compassion and care given these past months and to the outstanding staff at the Mary McCarthy House where he spent the last week

Visiting hours will be held Friday, January 3, 2014 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Doane Beal and Ames Funeral Home, 160 West Main Street, Hyannis MA.02601. His graveside service will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 11:00 am in Cummaquid Cemetery, Barnstable.
