Roy L. Vercollone, 96, died peacefully on August 12, surrounded by family. His wife of 70 years, Flora, passed away earlier this year. Roy loved people; he had deep and lasting connections with family, friends and colleagues of all ages. His disarming sense of humor, charm, curiosity and caring endeared him to all. Born and raised in Somerville and one of four sons of Stephen and Teresa Vercollone, Roy was a proud graduate of Mount Saint Mary’s University in Maryland. During World War II, he served as a Commander aboard a mine-sweeper in the South Pacific. On New Caledonia he met and married Flora Mackay-Sim, an Australian citizen working with The Red Cross. After returning to the Boston area, Roy began a long and successful career as a salesman with Hormel Foods. He and his wife raised a loving family of five children in Winchester; they later lived in Acton and Dartmouth. Roy is survived by his children and their spouses: Teresa Cryan and her husband Peter of Dartmouth, David and his wife Karen of Centerville, Susan Lloyd and her husband James of Centerville, Robert and his wife Becky of Watertown, and Lisa Arthofer and her husband Al of Seattle, WA. He was the adored grandfather of Jessica, Stephen, Vanessa, Aaron, Phillip, Allison, Andrew, Nicholas and Katherine, and great-grandfather to 11 wonderful children. Roy was predeceased by his brothers Edward, Richard and Eugene and their spouses; by several of his wife’s siblings and their spouses; by many close cousins; and by his beloved god-daughter Jean-Marie McClymont. Roy was the loving uncle of many, both here in the US and in Australia and England. Visitation will be held Monday, August 24, 4-7pm, at Doane Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 160 W. Main St., Hyannis. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, August 25, at 10:30am at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 324 Quaker Meeting House Rd., East Sandwich. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to Mount St. Mary’s University, Office of Advancement Services, 16300 Old Emmitsburg Road, Emmitsburg, MD 21727 or on-line at msmary.edu/give. Please indicate Roy Vercollone with your gift.
