Stephen O'Neil

Stephen was born on December 26th 1952 in Hyannis, MA to Dr. Francis and Marie (O’Hare) O’Neil of Hyannis Port. He was raised in Hyannis Port alongside his five siblings, and graduated from Barnstable High School in 1970.

Stephen built a successful career in real estate which was only the tip of the iceberg among his long list of talents and endeavors. In concert with his professional life, Stephen was actively involved in multiple civic initiatives in the Town of Barnstable, most recently serving as Chairman of the Hyannis Water Board.

A true Cape Cod native, Stephen had an adventurous spirit and deeply rooted affinity for the outdoors. From a young age he traversed the waters of Nantucket Sound and beyond. While his foremost skill at sea was casting an expertly placed fishing line, he also spent summers alongside his brothers and father racing their Wianno Senior, “Shamrock” out of the Hyannis Port Yacht Club. When not on the water, Stephen was an adept bird hunter and long-time member of Ducks Unlimited. His passion for waterfowling was matched only by his love of upland hunting, both of which he did alongside the companionship of his beloved bird dogs. Stephen was also an avid golfer–learning and honing his craft on the links of the Hyannisport Club from a young age. He was a sought-after partner and competitor, and a “Hot Shots” regular–full of endless entertainment for all who were fortunate to share time with him on the course.

As a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend, most paramount for Stephen was his devotion and loyalty to those around him. His greatest joy and proudest accomplishment were his children and more recently, his grandson. He will be remembered for his unwavering selflessness and his inherent disposition to lend a helping hand ahead of being asked. Stephen had a natural ability to capture the attention of a room with his sharp wit and disarming laugh. He shared his wisdom freely with those he loved. Everyone who knew Stephen will cherish his impact on their lives, whether through his friendship, mentorship, teaching or humor.

In addition to his loving wife Louise (Davidson) O’Neil of 40 years, Stephen is survived by his mother Marie (O’Hare) O’Neil of Centerville, MA; daughter Bonnie O’Neil of Centerville, MA; son Jeffrey O’Neil (Jillian) and beloved grandson Benjamin of Hyannis, MA; sisters Margaret O’Neil Holden (Rick) of Duxbury, MA, Cheryl Weber (Hans-Peter) of Hyannis Port, MA and Terry Jaxtimer (E.J.) of Osterville, MA. He is also survived by many cherished nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his father Francis O’Neil Sr. and his two brothers Jeffrey O’Neil and Francis O’Neil Jr.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 21st from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. at Doane, Beal & Ames, 160 West Main Street, Hyannis, MA 02601. Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, August 22nd at 10:00 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church followed by burial at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Centerville.
