

While valiantly battling a terminal illness, Sylviana Joseph-Bright drew her last breath on September 20, 2016 at the Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. She was 65 years of age. Sylviana was born on April 8, 1951 in St. John’s, Antigua as the eldest child of Sarah Appleton and Walter Joseph, both of whom are still living. Sylviana had 13 siblings in total, 12 of whom are surviving, by the names of: Marilyn Joseph, Princess Joseph, Nehemiah Joseph, Steadroy Joseph, Junie Joseph, Osbert Joseph, Charlesworth Joseph, Elta Joseph, Gwendy Joseph, Sylvia Joseph, Leeta Joseph-John, Thomas Joseph, and the late Ingrid Joseph. Sylviana is also survived by her husband Barrymore Bright, and by her beloved son and only child, Claudel-Aubert Etzer Leveille. In addition to the aforementioned names, Sylviana leaves behind many cherished extended friends and family.
Known to her close friends and kin as ”Ro” and “Romalyn”, Sylviana lived her life to the fullest extent and dedicated herself to taking care of those that she cherished the most. In Antigua, Sylviana worked for a Rent-A-Car Company, and when she moved to the United States in 1975, she worked for a company called Bonjour for several years as an administrative assistant. Sylviana was also a bonafide connoisseur of the arts. Music, dance, and poetry were some of her most distinct passions. Sylviana admired Alvin Ailey, the famed choreographer credited with popularizing African-American participation in 20th-century concert dance. During her life, Sylviana would attend performances by the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater whenever she had the opportunity to do so. A true child of the Caribbean, some of her favorite musical tastes included reggae artists such as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff, and Gregory Isaacs. From a young age, Sylviana enjoyed reading and writing, and she would spend much of her adult life acquiring knowledge from various genres of books. Sylviana was a deeply spiritual woman, and so she channeled her talent for writing into religious and nature-based poetry. Sylviana was a deep-thinker who enjoyed intellectual discussions on various topics including science, sports, health, education, and politics. Sylviana was a powerful woman and her incredible essence and her indelible legacy will continue into posterity.
Sylviana’s wake and open viewing of the casket will be held on Friday October 7, 2016 at 9 a.m. in Cape Cod Seventh-day Adventist Church, 2736 Falmouth Rd, Osterville, MA. The funeral service will be held on the same day at 10 a.m. at Cape Cod Seventh-day Adventist Church, her interment is scheduled for 11:30 a.m., at the Oak Neck Cemetery, on Oak Neck Road in Hyannis.
