BARNSTABLE- T. Berry Brazelton, MD, 99, died peacefully on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at his home. He was the husband of the late Christina (Lowell) Brazelton, with whom he shared many loving years of marriage until her passing in 2015. They lived for 67 years on Hawthorn Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts before they moved to Barnstable in 2014.
Born in Waco, TX, he was a son of Thomas Berry Brazelton, Sr. and Pauline (Battle)
Brazelton. Dr. Brazelton graduated from Princeton University in 1940 and Columbia
University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1943. He served his medical internship at Roosevelt Hospital.
After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he finished his medical residency at Massachusetts General Hospital followed by pediatric training at Boston Children's Hospital. In 1950 he opened his own pediatrics practice in Cambridge. In 1972 he founded the Child Development Unit at Children’s Hospital. Dr. Brazelton received many awards over his lifetime, including the Presidential Citizens Medal, presented by President Barack Obama in 2013.
Dr. Brazelton developed the Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS); and authored several books since 1969. He also was a host of an Emmy-award winning television program, “What Every Baby Knows.”
Berry, as he was known, was a charming and passionate man with a deep interest in making the lives of children and families better. He loved telling stories to get a laugh but most of his stories involved some bending of the truth. Berry was an avid tennis player and thrived on entertaining. In later life, he enjoyed painting. He loved his work with a passion that was infectious. But his true love was his elegant and shy wife, Chrissy, who endured his love of the limelight for most of her lifetime.
Berry is survived and will be deeply missed by his children, Tom Brazelton, MD, of Madison, Wisconsin, Kitty Brazelton, DMA, of New York City, Stina Brazelton of Berwick, Maine, and Polly Brazelton of Barnstable; along with seven grandchildren.
