John Raymond Goodrich
July 11, 1923 – July 31, 2018
John R. Goodrich, 95, of Idaho Falls, passed away at home Tuesday, July 31, 2018. John was born July 11, 1923 Champlin, MN son to John R. Goodrich and Erma Goodrich.
John grew up in Minnesota during the depression and enlisted into the U.S. Navy in 1942. Served in the S. Pacific during WWII as a Sonar Operator on the Destroyer Escort USS Donaldson. During the war, his ship supported the landings at Kwajalein, Peleliu, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and survived the “Halsey” typhoon. Of the typhoon he stated “I have been frightened many times since war, but never scared.” Following the war, he attended the University of Minnesota and received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
John married his wife of 68 years, Patricia Goodrich, in Minnesota and started a family and a career. He spent most of his career working for Argonne National Laboratory as an electrical engineer and retired in Idaho Falls in 1988.
John was an active participant and board member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church where he served as treasurer.
John enjoyed the outdoors and pursued activities which included fast pitch softball, camping, hunting, cross country skiing, hiking, golfing and white-water rafting.
John was a dedicated husband and father who instilled values into his children which carry forward to this day. He had a great sense of humor and made friends easily.
John is survived by his wife, Patricia, his children Laurie, John, James, Robert, Adam and three grandchildren, Ryann, Kelli and Katie.
John will be missed by all.
Services will be private.
