Doug was born on October 19, 1943, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Merland Maxwell and Iva B. (Weaver) Grimm. He grew up in Des Moines and attended Altoona High School in Altoona, Iowa, where he participated in football, chorus, and drama along with playing the saxophone in the marching band. After graduating in 1962, Doug attended Central University for two years and played football. He then honorably served in the United States Marine Corps, earning an M-14 marksmanship medal and other honors. He also served in the Vietnam War and was awarded the Vietnam Campaign Medal with device.
After his military service, Doug settled in Independence, Missouri. He was married to Linda Newham/VanSandt for 27 years, until 1995.
