Kale "Slick" Thomas Payne
March 23, 1939 – February 14, 2018
Kale Thomas “Slick” Payne, age 78, of Independence, MO passed away Feb 14, 2018 peacefully in his home surrounded by family. Visitation will be held from 4-5 pm with a Celebration of Life service from 5-6 pm on Saturday, Feb 24 at Newcomers Noland Road Chapel, 509 S. Noland Rd, Independence, MO 64050.
Kale was born on March 23, 1939 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Thomas and Thora (Clingman) Payne. He graduated from Stella High School in 1957 and then served honorably in the United States Army during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Kale was united in marriage to Carolyn Newkirk on May 31, 1968 in Neosho, MO. Kale spent his 30 year career at General Motors as an auto worker. He was a lifetime member of Eastgate Masonic Lodge and presided over all four York Rite bodies (KYCH).
He and his wife Carolyn were avid bargain hunters and enjoyed restoring old houses together. He was a true handyman (as he would say "more handy than a pocket on a shirt") and was highly skilled at working on old cars and refinishing houses, mostly for others and never considered it work. His sense of humor, great smile and laugh made his story telling second to none. He was a Model A enthusiast, enjoyed playing and listening to the music of Willie Nelson, loved watching the Royals and Chiefs with his family and was always up for celebrating life to the fullest with his family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his father, Thomas Haggard Payne, mother, Thora J. Payne and brother Dale Payne. He is survived by his wife of 50 years Carolyn Payne; daughters Laura (Payne) Lawrence of Kansas City, MO and Natalie (Payne) Turnbow of Independence, MO; son Johnny Payne of Conroe, TX; son-in-laws, Daryl Lawrence and Jerrod Turnbow; grandchildren, Kale, Grayson and Taylor Lawrence, Jonah Turnbow, Jeremy Payne, Kayla and Rachel Payne; great-grandchildren, Kaylynn and Rory.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the charity of your choice in his memory.
