

Lorna Kay Phillips, 81, of Kansas City, Missouri passed away on April 25, 2025, in Independence, Missouri. Lorna was born in 1944 in Jefferson City, Missouri, to Fred and Lucille Scott, grew up surrounded by the gentle rhythms of farm life and the warmth of family, living next door to her beloved grandparents. From her earliest days, Lorna’s life was marked by a deep love for learning, music, and community - a spirit she carried with her always.
A proud graduate of Helias Catholic High School’s Class of 1962, Lorna’s school years were filled with song and service. She lent her voice to the Chorus and Madrigal Singers, brought stories to life in the Senior Play, and contributed her energy to Good Council and HiLites. After graduation, her adventurous heart led her west with friends, marveling at wonders like the Hoover Dam and the bright lights of Las Vegas- a trip that sparked a lifelong passion for travel.
Lorna’s journey was one of resilience and achievement. She began her career as a secretary for the Missouri State Highway Patrol, later serving with distinction at the Department of Corrections. As a single mother of two children, she returned to school, earning her associate’s and bachelor’s degrees in Social Sciences, and ultimately graduating summa cum laude with a master’s in Library Sciences from CMSU. Her academic excellence was recognized by the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, a testament to her unwavering commitment to growth and knowledge.
Her professional life culminated as a probation and parole officer, where she brought compassion and fairness to all she served. Lorna also shared her wisdom as a substitute teacher in Warrensburg and Knob Noster schools, inspiring young minds with her love of learning.
Travel remained a constant joy for Lorna. She explored nearly every corner of the United States and, in 2007, fulfilled a lifelong dream by journeying through Europe for three months with her son and his family-passing along her curiosity and love of discovery to the next generation.
Lorna’s faith was the wellspring of her generosity. She believed deeply that through Christ, all things were possible, and she lived this truth daily. Her home and heart were always open to friends, family, and strangers alike. Through her work with Bessie’s House and The Salvation Army, she offered shelter, hope, and kindness to those most in need, embodying a spirit of forgiveness and unconditional love.
Lorna was preceded in death by her first husband and soulmate, Ewald Weiser, and by her parents, Fred and Lucille. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion, perseverance, and faith- a life that touched countless others and continues to inspire all who knew her.
Her story is one of boundless love, quiet strength, and an enduring belief in the goodness of people. Lorna’s memory will forever be a blessing and a guiding light to her family, friends, and the many lives she uplifted along her remarkable journey
Lorna is survived by her five sisters: Linda, Layne, Leslie, Leah, and Laura, her 4 brothers: Mike, John, DJ, and Steve, many nieces, nephews, their spouses and their children, her chosen daughter Christina, her son Scott and his spouse Latrisha, her daughter Lisa, and her spouse Mark and her grandchildren: Devin, Persephone, Atticus, Caitlin, Gabriella and Mia.
