A devoted family man, proud entrepreneur, and friend to many, Mel lived a full and meaningful life marked by love, laughter, and purpose.
Mel was born on August 8, 1943, in Denver, Colorado, Mel was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Diane Carey, with whom he shared a deep and lasting bond. He is survived by his loving children: Amanda McCabe, her husband John and their daughters Brianna and Regan; Ryan Carey, his wife April and their children James and Eleanor; and Matthew Carey, his wife Samantha and their daughters Aubriella, Jasmine, and Kalena.
Mel spent time as a carpenter along with raising racehorses in his early adulthood. Later as an entrepreneur he owned and operated multiple businesses over the course of his life. Mel also drove a school bus for 20 years. He had an unmatched work ethic, a creative mind, and the heart of a leader. But outside of his professional achievements, Mel was most at home in a pair of blue jeans, enjoying the great outdoors, mowing on a tractor, or hitting the road for a spontaneous trip. He had a deep love for nature and adventure.
Known for his good sense of humor and approachable personality, Mel was someone you could always count on—genuine, generous, and endlessly kind. He loved connecting with people, sharing stories, and making others feel seen and heard.
A devoted Catholic, Mel was a faithful member of Our Lady of the Presentation, where his faith was a guiding force throughout his life.
Mel will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His legacy lives on through his children and grandchildren, and through the countless lives he touched with his warmth, wisdom, and unwavering love.
