Susan Burns, 64, Blue Springs, MO passed away on October 30th, 2025.
Susan was born June 18th, 1961 in Airdrie, Scotland. She lived in Rutherglen, Scotland until she immigrated with her parents to the US in 1967, settling in Independence, MO. She graduated from Truman High School in 1979 and attended Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg. Susan then married Larry Burns on June 16th, 1984.
Later that year they moved to Colorado, where she often vacationed with her family. She and her husband lived in Pueblo for a time and then moved to Colorado Springs where their daughter, Alison, was born. She and her family enjoyed cycling, camping, and yoga. Adventurous, enthusiastic, and with a great sense of humor she was always the perfect hostess and tour guide when family visited in Colorado. They spent a lot of time hiking in the mountains, including climbing Pikes Peak from bottom to top.
Her work included retail and babysitting and then in her spare time she also loved to run. She loved nature and animals, taking in several stray cats over the years and giving them a caring home.
Her favorite band was Queen, but she also listened to a variety of rock and other music. She also liked to read and some of her favorite books were western novels by Louis L’Amour. She enjoyed creating hand-crafted items, some of which were given as gifts to family.
Susan was a very giving woman and always wanted the best for others. She was very caring, compassionate, and kind. Even in her last days when she could barely speak, she would thank the nurses for caring for her. Determined and strong, she was born with the strength of a Scot and that perseverance stayed with her until her last moments. She was always generous even when she didn’t have a lot herself. Her compassion led her to volunteer at Wayside Waifs with her daughter. Along with her love of nature, she was always drawn to Native American culture, pulling some of her spiritual beliefs from their traditions.
Separated from her husband, Susan moved back to Independence, MO with her daughter in 2010. In 2011, Susan met Edward Humbel with whom she spent the rest of her life. Throughout their years together they enjoyed trying new restaurants and traveling to various places, including Cozumel. After her cancer diagnoses, Ed supported her throughout her treatments and was her strength.
Susan did not want a service but wanted her ashes scattered at Rocky Mountain National Park which her daughter will do next year.
Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Matthew and Margaret (Moncrieff) Kyle.
She is survived by her daughter, Alison Burns of Kansas City, MO; sister, Marjorie Herndon and her husband, David, of Independence, MO; and partner, Edward Humbel of Blue Springs, MO.
She is sorely missed until we are together again. Wherever she is now, she will always be loved and remembered.
