and grandparents who prioritized their faith and family above all else. Their 51-year marriage was a testimony to enduring love and partnership with an unwavering commitment to God. Their shared life created a strong foundation of love, kindness, and integrity that touched the lives of everyone around them. They were vibrant role models of partnership, parenting, and faith.
Mark and Vickie met and dated at the University of Nebraska - Kearney. They then went their separate ways, Vickie to Arizona, Mark to the Army and then a banking position in Chicago. They reunited, marrying in Scottsbluff, Nebraska on May 11, 1974.
They settled in Mark’s hometown of Kearney, Nebraska where their 3 daughters were born. Mark worked with his father in the lumber and hardware industry. In 1988, seeking to start a new business,
Mark and Vickie relocated to Chico, California.
Life flourished in Chico with Vickie working as an administrative assistant in the College of Business at CSU, Chico, and Mark beginning his investment advisor career with Edward D. Jones. Together they launched Spelts Wealth Management in 2002. The
business continues to this day as a highly trusted and successful investment firm. Mark and Vickie were devoted community members. They founded the Chico Police Business Support Team, actively supported Chico Airport, and Canyon Oaks Country
Club. Out of state, they continued their support of University of Nebraska - Kearney. Most significant was their support and governance of Enloe Health. Mark began as investment advisor to the Enloe Foundation Board and was later the chairman of the
Enloe Health System board at a time of dramatic change which included the purchase of Chico Community Hospital.
Meanwhile, Mark endured treatment for 3 different cancers. With Vickie’s support, he handled these episodes with incredible grace and trust in God. Despite the rigors of the treatments, he carried
himself with quiet dignity and uttered not a single word of frustration or complaint. Being victimized by cancer was not a part of Mark’s character.
Mark and Vickie’s lives were filled with their shared love of golf. They enjoyed frequent evening rounds together, playing 4 or 5 holes after an early dinner, golf trips to Florida and Atlanta, and always having friendly competitions with each other filled with the requisite trash talk. Vickie was particularly active with golf, winning tournaments, traveling with her golfing girlfriends, and habitually besting Mark. She had a lifetime record of 5 holes-in-one, including the iconic 7th hole at Pebble Beach.
Despite the demands of business, travel, and community service, their priority remained their devotion to family. Mark and Vickie were not just parents but friends, confidants, and supporters to
their children and grandchildren based on an incredibly strong Christian faith. Together, they modeled a life filled with cherished memories, laughter, and love, nurturing a very close-knit family
and friend circle.
Those who will miss them forever include their 3 daughters and families; Jordan Spelts, Jennifer (Robert) Mein, and Jacqueline (Federico) Roth; their adored grandchildren Robert, Derek, and Sienna Mein, and Evangeline and Liliana Roth. Other grieving family members are Mark’s sisters, Aneeta Brown, Marsha Bolan, and Rhonda Krom; and Vickie’s siblings, Dee Lilla Bedecke and Jon Lee
Nuss. They were preceded in death by Mark’s parents, Carl and Georgia Spelts, and Vickie’s parents, Jon and Lucille Nuss.
