Bill was born in January 1935 to Warnie and Ocie Moran in Columbus Junction, Iowa. One of 11 children, Bill graduated from Columbus High School in 1953. He played football for his high school. Upon graduation, Bill volunteered for the U.S. Navy.
He married Patsy Carey of Fredonia, Iowa in 1957. Together they raised five children – Patrick, Mona, Bryan, Heather and Mindy. In 1963, Bill graduated from the University of Iowa with a Chemistry major. He went on to earn his Master’s degree in Chemistry from the University of North Dakota.
Bill taught for many years at the Junior high and High school level before entering private industry employment in the Chemistry field. He ended his career with Bayer Agricultural in Kansas City, Missouri where he retired in 1998.
He met his wife Beth at Bayer and together they retired and enjoyed an active period of travel and experiences. Active snowbirds, Bill and Beth looked forward to residing in Florida or California in the winters and enjoying social relationships in several communities.
Bill’s passions were many but included the University of Iowa sports and academics, catfishing, history, and travel. Especially during his retirement, Bill was able to visit Ireland, Europe, and the Caribbean. Just last year Bill took an extended vacation with his close friend Phil Rowan to the Baltics and Russia. With his Ford Ranger pickup well laid out in Bill’s methodical manner, he would hit the American road as well, traveling to historical sites back east or western National parks. Bill possessed an incredible curiosity and love of life which defined his entire 83 years and left a legacy passed on to present and future generations.
Bill leaves behind a gracious and loving family including wife Beth, 5 children, 15 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, 3 step children and 3 sisters. He will be deeply missed.
