William McKinley Herndon Jr., known to many as Bill and to family and friends as "Bubba," passed away on June 10, 2026. He was born on July 6, 1948, in Des Moines, Iowa, to William McKinley Herndon Sr. and Lucille Herndon.
As the oldest of seven children, Bill was admired by his siblings and was always someone people enjoyed being around. The nickname "Bubba" followed him throughout his life, and while its origins may be uncertain, it became a name spoken with affection by those who knew and loved him.
Growing up, Bill developed a passion for cars that never faded. His room was filled with car magazines, photos, and anything automotive. He could spend hours talking about engines, classic designs, and the latest innovations. One of his prized possessions was a 1939 Ford that he loved to tinker with. While the car seemed to require as much attention as it provided driving time, Bill never lost his enthusiasm for working on it.
After graduating from high school, Bill joined the United States Air Force and proudly served his country for nearly five years. While stationed at Whiteman Air Force Base, he met Gloria Frazier. Together they built a life and welcomed two sons, Quincey and Chris, who remained a source of pride and joy throughout his life.
Following his military service, Bill pursued another passion and became an Air Traffic Controller. Aviation fascinated him, and he never lost his appreciation for the skies. Whether discussing airplanes, sharing stories from his career, or simply watching aircraft overhead, his enthusiasm was unmistakable.
Bill was never afraid to take a chance. During his career, he stepped away from air traffic control to pursue an entrepreneurial dream and open a KFC franchise. Although the venture lasted only a few years, it reflected his willingness to take risks, follow his ambitions, and build something of his own. It was during this chapter of his life that he met Cindy Eslinger. They later married and began building a life together.
When Bill married Cindy, he gained two additional children, Kelly and Chris Austin, expanding the family he cherished. Together, Bill and Cindy also provided foster and respite care to youth for nearly ten years, opening their home and hearts to children in need.
Another love of Bill's was his pets. Over the years, many dogs and cats found their way into the family and into Bill's heart. The last was Ginger, affectionately known as "Gingerbread," who became his constant companion. Whether running errands or simply taking a drive, the two were often found together on the road.
Over the years, Bill was actively involved in numerous organizations supporting youth and families, including Stride for Life, PTA, Youth Friends, Young Astronauts, Booster Club, and other activities within the Fort Osage School District. He enjoyed investing his time in helping others, mentoring young people, and supporting families in his community.
He enjoyed reading, listening to music, watching movies, following cars, watching sporting activities, and striking up conversations with fellow veterans whenever the opportunity arose. He truly never met a stranger.
At the center of Bill's life was his faith. Jesus Christ was his Lord and Savior, and he found comfort, strength, and purpose in that relationship. His faith guided the way he treated others and provided him with hope through life's challenges. He was an active member of Fort Osage Church of the Nazarene, where he taught Bible study and enjoyed sharing his knowledge of scripture with others. For those who loved him, there is peace in knowing that he now rests in the presence of his Savior. Fittingly, Bill rarely ended a phone call with "goodbye." Instead, he would simply say, "Blessings," a small but meaningful expression of the faith and goodwill he wished upon everyone he encountered.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William McKinley Herndon Sr. and Lucille Herndon; his brothers, Michael Herndon, Eric Herndon, and David Herndon; and his sister, Lori Herndon.
He is survived by his wife, Cindy Herndon; his children, Quincey, Chris, Kelly, and Chris Austin; his grandchildren, Griffin, Victoria, Danielle, Haley, Samantha, Lillah, Olivia, Blakelea, and CJ; his sisters, Lucia Horning and Leslie Herndon; and many other family members and friends who will cherish his memory and carry forward the stories, conversations, and blessings he shared throughout his life.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, July 10, 2026, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Buckner Town Hall, 32 S. Sibley Street, Buckner, Missouri.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Bill's name to Shep's Place Senior Dog Sanctuary.
