Although dementia brought challenges and gradual goodbyes, Merrick (Rick) gave his family countless reasons to love, remember and smile. He passed away peacefully on June 16, 2025. His family is deeply grateful for the time they shared and finds comfort in knowing he is now free from pain.
Rick was born in Kerrobert, Saskatchewan, but his early years were spent in Luseland. He moved with his family to Prince Albert in 1963 and later to Fort Qu’Appelle in 1970. While Rick was still in high school, the family relocated to Winnipeg. It was during a visit back to Fort Qu’Appelle to see friends that Rick met the love of his life, Donna — a meeting that would mark the beginning of a lifelong partnership rooted in love, patience and shared dreams.
After a short time living in Regina, Rick and Donna settled in Qu’Appelle, where they built the home in which they raised their two children, Nova and Kelsey. That home became a gathering place for family and friends — always welcoming, always full of warmth and good conversation. Later, Rick and Donna built a second home on a quarter section south of town, giving Rick the space to pursue one of his lifelong passions: restoring his collection of 1968 Chrysler Plymouth vehicles.
A true handyman, Rick had an innate ability to build, fix and figure out just about anything. He believed that if someone else could do it, he could learn how — and he usually did. His knowledge of construction came not only from hands-on experience but also from years working for companies such as Crown Mart, Beaver Lumber, Fries Tallman Lumber and Northridge. Whether framing walls, installing siding, or rebuilding an engine, Rick approached every project with care, patience and precision.
Though a quiet man by nature, Rick’s words were always worth hearing. He had a calm, steady presence and a gift for teaching others — never rushed, always encouraging. His sense of humour, often dry and laced with sarcasm, would catch people off guard and leave them smiling.
Rick was predeceased by his parents Gladys and Vernon Scheidt. He is lovingly remembered by his wife Donna; children Nova (Tim) and Kelsey (Brooke) and grandchildren Oakley and Kayley, who brought him so much pride. He is also survived by his sisters Monica and Verna (Chris); brothers Rod and Greg (Lillian); sisters-in-law: Joanne, Elaine and Sharon (Rob); as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends who will miss his wisdom, humour and steady presence.
Rick built a life filled with strength, deep love and practical wisdom. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the lessons he passed down — not just about how to build a house or restore a car, but about how to live with integrity, kindness and quiet pride.
Charitable donations may be made to Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan, 301-2550 12 Ave. Regina, SK S4P 3X1

A celebration of Rick’s life will be held in the Uplands Community Center, 20 Weekes Crescent, Regina, Saskatchewan on Saturday, July 19, 2025 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
