

As a child, AJ loved to attend school. He graduated Gentry High School class of 1973. After graduation, he moved to Indianapolis, Indiana for a better opportunity and to start a new life.
Shortly after, he met Genita Merritt and started a family. To this union 3 daughters were born: Tamekia, Crystal, and Lakisha.
His career path lead him to become an automotive mechanic and to join the National Guard. He later became a fleet mechanic for the military, in which he served and advanced in rank to Sergeant Major, prior to retiring after 41 years of service in 2016.
AJ loved listening to the blues, collecting coins, and he was a die- hard hometown sports fan. He especially enjoyed spending time at the Fat Cat Bar, where he developed countless relationships that were near and dear to his heart. To know him is to truly love him. He will be greatly missed and forever in our hearts.
AJ departed this life on November 24, 2024 at the of age of 70 yrs old. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ora Lee Truitt-Johnson; brothers: Stanley Johnson, Ernest Johnson, Curtis Johnson, and sister, Hazel Gean Banyon.
AJ leaves to cherish his memory 3 daughters,: Tamekia Johnson, Crystal Bannister (Chelsey), Lakisha Brooks (John); 6 grand children: Janea Moore, Kishawn Taylor, Jarron Bills, Javawn Brooks, Chaela Bannister, and Caelyn Bannister; 2 great-grand children, Jakhi Williams and Jayah Bridges all of Indianapolis, Indiana; sisters, LuLa Bell Johnson and Jaqueline Johnson of St. Louis, Missori, also, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and special friends.
A visitation for AJ will be held Friday, December 6, 2024 at 10:00 AM at Crown Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery, 700 W. 38th St., Indianapolis, Indiana 46208, followed by a celebration of life with military honors at 12:00 PM.
AJ will be laid to rest in Crown Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery, 700 W. 38th St., Indianapolis, IN 46208.
