
Alphonso was born in Indianapolis on July 5, 1932 to Alphonso and Mildred (Taylor) Mailes. Upon the death of his mother in 1938, Alphonso was raised by his maternal grandmother in Marion, Indiana and his father in Indianapolis, Indiana. He attended Marion High School and enjoyed fishing, roller skating and hayrides. After high school Al, proudly served his country and was honorably discharged from the United States Army.
Alphonso loved to travel and lived in Indiana and Colorado, before retiring as a laborer. He was a man of deep faith, reading and studying his Bible daily; and had a loving heart and brilliant wit. He enjoyed watching all manner of sports on television especially basketball, football and boxing.
Al formed many lasting friendships over the years and prior to the Covid-19 pandemic he especially enjoyed weekly visits to Golden Gardens Adult Day Center in Indianapolis, Indiana. One of his fondest memories was being selected to participate in the Veterans Honor Flight Program. The event was a one day trip to Washington, D.C. to visit the National WWII Memorial and Korean War Memorial, and his traveling guardian was an employee with Golden Gardens Adult Day Center.
Alphonso is preceded in death by his parents, his sister and brother-in-law Eva J. (Mailes) and James W. Brown, and his nephew Anthony D. Brown.
Sonny (as his was fondly referred to by family) is survived by his nieces Kimberly J. Brown and husband Lee A. Robinson; and Linda E. Brown and husband John L. Miller. Family and friends will cherish his memory.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the physicians and staff at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center; especially Drs. Michael Sha and Chase Carroll.
The family is also thankful for the nursing staff, social workers and management at Greenwood Healthcare Center, Greenwood, Indiana; and University Heights Living Center, Indianapolis, Indiana.
The family is especially grateful to the supportive team and staff at Heart to Heart Hospice, Indianapolis, Indiana.
