Betty Ann (Torrence) Bunton, was born October 13, 1943 by her parents, John Oliver Torrence Sr. and Ruthie Lee Tatum-Doss. At an early age, Betty was introduced to her beautiful Stepmother, Mary Ella Nichols-Moore, who assumed the responsibility of nurturing, guiding and parenting Betty and her dear brother, John Oliver Torrence Jr. Betty learned so many lessons from her Stepmother Mary; one of her fondest lessons was her recreational enjoyment of playing many different card games and cooking.
Betty was a dedicated and loving mother, sister, auntie, grandmother and friend, while also assuming the role of matriarch for the Torrence and Johnson family. Betty Ann attended the Indianapolis Public School system, where she met Ronald Max Johnson Sr. in 1958. In 1960, Betty and Ronald gave birth to Terry Lee Johnson Sr., and soon after in 1961, the two gave birth to Jonathan Max Johnson Sr. Betty Ann was a dedicated and faithful mother to both Terry and Jonathan and inspired them in many different areas of their lives. Betty not only was a mother to her two sons, but she also played a vastly important role in mothering Darris Nichole Greenfield and Johnetta Marie Patterson from birth. With Betty’s leadership and guidance in both Darris and Johnetta’s lives, they will forever carry her memories.
During Betty’s working years, she cleaned at The Market Square Center famously known as The Gold Building for many years. Betty was also a cook, waitress and a caregiver to many children. Betty Ann had several talents, but her favorite was to crochet quilts and blankets by hand for family and friends. In her spare time, Betty loved watching the Discovery Channel, completing Word Search and playing Solitaire. Betty Ann was an extraordinary card player, her memorable saying “I’ll play you a few,” regarding Spades, Bid Whist, and Dad always convinced others to play with her.
Betty was very loving and had a heart of gold. Betty enjoyed a simple and happy life and could impress anyone who came into her presence with her honest and heartfelt humor. In her later years, Betty enjoyed waking up every Sunday morning to praise and worship with her Daughter-in-law, Cheryl Squires, who helped take good care of Betty until her death.
