Brian was born in Terre Haute, IN and raised in Indianapolis where he attended North Central High School before graduating from Texas Tech University with a degree in Petroleum Engineering. From a young age, Brian aspired to follow in his grandfather Owen’s footsteps and forge a career in the oil and gas industry.
Brian’s career evolved from engineering to energy investment banking; he was not only motivated by his own success, but also the success of his colleagues. He spent most of his career at RBC Capital Markets in Houston where he developed friendships that he cherished for the rest of his life. He retired from RBC at 50 to satisfy his lifelong dream of owning his own energy company and started Westmoreland Gas LLC in 2018.
Brian loved to tell people that he met his wife, Rebecca “Becky” (Timberman) Akins, in seventh grade math class. They were married for 36 years and had three children, who were his greatest joys in life. He loved to travel with his family, most notably to the Seven Lazy P Ranch in Montana, Sanibel Island, and on Disney Cruises. Brian was famous for his Friday night steak nights, quoting Lonesome Dove, feeding his friends and family and anyone else that was around. He was an avid Texas Tech fan, and loved tailgating at Butler University football games, where he could feed even more people. He was a long-standing member of The Bridgewater Club where he played in the Sunday morning “Bellies” golf group.
He is survived by his wife and his children, Lauren Akins Mlady (Michael Mlady), Owen Akins (Laura Akins), and Noah Akins (Jaelin Vergara); his father and best friend, Larry Akins and stepmother, Shirley Akins; mother, Rita Akins; and sister, Kristi Akins. He was preceded in death by his in-laws, Judith (Mattox) Timberman and Frederic Timberman.
Brian will be laid to rest at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis in a private family gathering. A celebration of life will be held at The Bridgewater Club, 3535 E. 161st Street, Carmel, Indiana on March 21, 2026 from 1:00 - 4:00 PM. Contributions can be made in Brian’s memory to the Hamilton County Humane Society or your favorite charity.
