Calvin Theodore “Ted” Huffman, 89, passed away peacefully Tuesday, August 22,2017, at Westminster Village North. He was born January 2, 1928, in Sylvania, Ohio to John and Velma Huffman. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Betty Huffman; brothers Chester, Harry, and John and sister Lucille Huffman.
Ted is survived by his children Beth (Paul) Miller and Paul (Robin) Huffman and six grandchildren Hayley, Alexis, Blake, and Mia Miller and Joel and Erin Huffman; brother David Huffman and sisters Velerh Bruno, Pauline Harrell, and Salinda Cowdrey.
Ted was a wonderful father, husband, and grandfather and will be greatly missed. He served his country for four years in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. When he returned home, he began to pursue his dream of becoming a golf pro. He loved golf and eventually decided to build his own golf course in Griffith, Indiana called Griffith Golf Center. He was the owner, operator, and golf pro of the course. One year Ernie Banks (Mr. Cub) came in for lessons and really liked his coaching style. The course was close to Chicago but far enough away for him to be under the radar and come play a round with Ted. He never told anyone it was Ernie, it was up to them to figure it out. People in Griffith, most huge Cubs fans, would never imagine Ernie would be playing there! He ran the golf course until he “retired” in 1984 and moved to Melbourne, Florida where he then worked for Avis for another 20 years.
Eight years ago Ted and Betty moved back up North to Indianapolis to Westminster Village North Retirement Community. He enjoyed spending time with his grandkids that lived only 5 minutes away, and always loved when the Florida grandkids would come for a visit. We are sincerely grateful for all the nurses and staff at Aspen Commons for taking such good care of him for the last 3 years. Graveside services will be held in October in Sylvania, Ohio.
