

Carolyn Sue Herron, affectionately known as “Aunt Cookie,” was born on December 1, 1935, in Indianapolis, Indiana. She lived a life rich in love, laughter, and humility. Celebrated for her culinary prowess, Aunt Cookie brought joy to family and friends with her renowned ambrosia salad and delectable lemon and rum cakes.
A proud native of Indianapolis, Carolyn dedicated her career to the
Indianapolis School for the Deaf, where she eventually retired with pride. She found happiness in life's simple pleasures, including watching Black Lifetime TV and Hallmark movies. She also enjoyed pampering herself at the hair salon and indulging in her love for reading. Fiercely independent, she often joked, “None of your business.” Her gentle smile and infectious laughter endeared her to all who knew her.
Her spiritual foundation was rooted in Eastern Star Baptist Church in Indianapolis, where she was a member. Carolyn cherished her church community and found comfort in the unwavering love of Jesus.
Carolyn served as a loving caregiver, setting a profound example by
caring selflessly for both her husband and later her mother during their times of need. As the family matriarch she was known for her wisdom, listening ear and loving yet, honest opinions.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her father, George Parrott; mother, Rowena Lewis; husband, Carl Herron; and her sisters Zenobia Thomas, Oneida Burns, Diane Haynes, and Peggy Greer.
She leaves to cherish her memory and continue her legacy her siblings: Marvin (Essolene) Parrott, of California, Phyllis Sims, Indiana, Ralph (Charlotte) Parrott of Indiana, JoAnne Bryson of Indiana, Louis Yates Jr. of Indiana, Mary (Archie) Jordan of Kansas, Brenda Fox of Ohio, John (Erica) Yates of California, Gerald (Daisy) Yates of California, Donna (Aubrey) Jones of California, and Mary-Louise Gibson of Indiana.
Her children, Carla Patrick of Pennsylvania, Steven Ewing of Alaska, and Carmen (William) Fears of Indiana, along with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a multitude of nieces, nephews, and many loved ones, will forever hold her memory dear. She also leaves behind her beloved dog, Cino, who was her constant companion and best friend.
A visitation will be held at Crown Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery in Remembrance Hall, located at 700 W. 38th St., Indianapolis, Indiana, 46208, on November 20, 2025, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm.
Following the visitation, a Celebration of Life will take place at the same venue, starting at 12:00 pm.
