

Clista Peterson, lovingly known as “Mom” and “Mema,” passed away peacefully on May 16, 2026, at the age of 73, surrounded by family and friends. Born on March 30, 1953, to Freddie Childress and Lula Bentley, Clista lived a life rooted in faith, love, and devotion to her family.
Clista attended IPS School #210 for elementary school and graduated from Crispus Attucks High School. From an early age, she accepted Jesus Christ into her life, and her faith remained a guiding force throughout her journey.
A beacon of love and kindness, Clista was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who cherished every moment spent with her family. She was known as the best grandma and storyteller, lovingly fussing at her family while showering them with affection at the same time. Sweet, generous, selfless, and caring, she always put the needs of others before her own.
Clista had a vibrant spirit and a heart that welcomed everyone. She loved dancing, listening to music, and especially cooking for family and friends. A true people person, she never met a stranger and had a gift for making everyone feel loved and valued.
She retired from IPS District in 1993 after faithfully serving as a bus driver.
Clista was preceded in death by her parents, Freddie Childress and Lula Bentley; her sister, Rosemary Cousin; and her brother-in-law, Ray Bryant.
She leaves to cherish her memory her daughters, Marketa Peterson Owens (Stephen Owens) and Yvonne Peterson Taylor (Coi Taylor); her son, Lawrence “Larry” Brown Jr.; her sisters, Lula Bryant, Tanya Singh, Christine Frazier, and Imani Salters (Amy); and her special friend, Johnny Green.
She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren: Shanika Jackson (Frederrick Jackson), Marshay Owens (Joshua Green), Stephen Owens, India Robertson, and Cameron Thomas (Ashley McGinnis); and her treasured great-grandchildren: Ja’Niyah Love, Summer Jackson, Mecca Jackson, King Robertson, Royal Robertson, Casandra Thomas, Cami Clista Thomas, and Nigel Taylor.
Clista was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed by all who had the blessing of knowing her. Her love, faith, laughter, and warmth will forever remain in the hearts of her family and friends.
Visitation will be held at Crown Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery, Gothic Chapel, 700 W. 38th St., Indianapolis, Indiana 46208, on May 30, 2026, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.
A Graveside Memorial Service will take place at Crown Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery, 700 W. 38th St., Indianapolis, Indiana 46208, on May 30, 2026, at 2:00 pm.
