Corinne Shines, affectionately known as “Coco” to her family and friends, peacefully transitioned to heaven surrounded by family and friends the morning of December 10, 2021. Coco was born in Pulaski, TN and moved to Indianapolis at an early age with her father, mother, and brother. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior and was baptized into the Baptist Denomination at an early age. Her parents, Birt Shines and Magnolia Brown Shines, and brother Thurman Shines, preceded her in death.
Coco graduated from Shortridge High School in 1960, a year earlier than she was scheduled to graduate. In the fall of 1960, she entered Central State University located in Wilberforce, Ohio. Upon receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1964, Coco returned to Indianapolis, met, and married Robert Brown in May 1966. During the late 1960’s she joined the Indianapolis Social Club “Miss Voguettes”. Staying true to her academic calling, she entered the education sector, where she taught for several years. After realizing successful years in education, and still committed to servant leadership, she accepted a social worker position for The Indiana Department of Child Welfare Services. She was later promoted to supervisor and celebrated a rewarding career in serving and sowing seeds of positive change in the lives of many Hoosier families. Electing to retire early to experience the joys of leisure living, Coco retired at the age of sixty.
After retirement, Coco volunteered at The Indiana State Museum. Beginning in early childhood, a love for fashion, art, and interior design, was present and easily noticed and admired by family members. A keen eye for detail, and a talent for re-design and re-work of objects and items, Coco became an entrepreneur and opened an antique shop in the Eastgate Shopping Center. The shop was stocked with unique pieces, and during that time several lasting relationships were established with antique dealers across the state.
Reading and keeping abreast on current day topics were important to Coco, but most important was the study of the Word of God. Shortly after retirement, Coco began attending a Wednesday Bible Study. Her goal was to understand the Word for herself. Many hours were spent sharing her knowledge with family, friends, neighbors, and strangers.
Coco loved spending time with family and friends and traveling. Her favorite place to travel was to Mazatlán, Mexico. She was known for her bright smile and positive demeanor. Coco never met a stranger and made all feel welcome.
She leaves many family members to cherish her memory: Dr. John A.
