Dan Short, 85, of Indianapolis, IN passed away on July 31, 2026. He was born on June 22, 1941 to Richard L Short and Lula Jane Short (Webster). He is survived by his loving wife, Cheryl Short (Hagerman), a union of 46 years. Dan is also survived by his two children, Danette (Jason) Short-Meek and Jerry (Cindy) Short. He adored his four grandchildren, Ryan, Natalie, Allison and Olivia and special nephew Leonard Wall (Elaine) and their children, Damon (Victoria) Wall and Crysta (Mitch) Sutherland.
Dan attended School 21 and graduated from Arsenal Technical H.S. in 1959. He received a Computer Technology degree with honors from Purdue University. His computer programming skills were utilized at Dow Chemical, EDS (formerly Allison Gas Turbine), and Indycon.
Dan was proud to serve in the US Air Force from 1961 to 1965 as a cryptographic specialist stationed in Germany, Alaska and Key West during the Cuban Crisis.
There wasn’t a greater fisherman! Up before sunrise and stay until sunset to fish anywhere with friends and Cheryl. Trips to Lake Tahoe, Lake Mead, Biloxi MS, and South Carolina were Dan’s favorites. When COVID kept him inside, he began a love of jigsaw puzzles and reading books. He was the best Dog Dad to five Corgis over the years. Dan was proud of his family’s business, Shorts Market in Bean Blossom, IN. He and his Dad also started wholesaling, mostly cantaloupes, at the Old Farmer’s Market downtown. He loved Elvis Presley and worked his last concert at Market Square Arena.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Eloise Short and Venita Combs, and nieces JoJo Day and Lora Jane George.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Wounded Warrior Project, any animal rescue group, or a charity of your choice.
Visitation will be held at Crown Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery, Remembrance Hall, 700 W. 38th St., Indianapolis, Indiana 46208, on August 6, 2026, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, followed by the Funeral Service at 5:00 pm.
