Darlene Ruth (McQuitty) Altherr-Lemon

September 12, 1935 – July 23, 2026

Darlene Ruth McQuitty Altherr-Lemon, age 90, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family and strengthened by her faith in the promise of eternal life. Grounded in her Catholic faith, Darlene lived a life of love, generosity, and quiet strength. Her greatest joy was her family, and she leaves behind a legacy of unwavering faith, devoted motherhood, and countless cherished memories.

Born on September 12, 1935, in Elwood, Indiana, Darlene was the beloved daughter of Olin McQuitty and Mildred Rubert McQuitty. Throughout her life, she exemplified compassion, resilience, and selfless love. She found joy in life's simple blessings and believed that family was one of God's greatest gifts.

For nearly a decade, Darlene worked as a school bus driver, a role she truly enjoyed as she safely transported and cared for generations of children. She was also known for her many talents and passions. An avid bowler and golfer for many years, she embraced friendly competition and treasured the friendships those activities brought. She was an exceptional cook who loved preparing meals for family and friends. Her generous spirit extended beyond her own family, as she delighted in preparing and serving meals to Priests and Sisters of the Catholic faith. She also had a special place in her heart for the family's dogs, whose companionship brought her endless comfort and joy.

Darlene was one of the biggest fans her family could ever have. She took immense pride in cheering on anything Cathedral High School, the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and the Indiana University Hoosiers. Whether in the stands, watching from home, or celebrating victories with loved ones, she never missed a chance to cheer on her favorite teams, especially when family was involved.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 44 years, William Altherr; her husband of 17 years, Merle Lemon; her cherished son, Scott Patrick Altherr; her parents, Olin and Mildred McQuitty; and two of her brothers Bobby & Darrell McQuitty.

She is survived by her brother Bill McQuitty; and her loving children: Kelly M. Altherr; Ruth A. (Daniel) Rench; Angela M. (Daniel) Janke; Maureen A. (Daniel) Lenahan; Kerry A. Altherr; and Eric Wm. (Allison) Altherr.

She was the proud and devoted grandmother of sixteen grandchildren: Elizabeth (Edwin) Tirona, Ryan (Kelly) Giebel, Alex (Laura) Altherr, Sarah (Anthony) Chavez, Kelly (Shane) McFerren, Morgan (Josh) Hannoy, Joshua Lenahan, Kalyn (Tommy) Warren, Jessica Janke, Halle Janke, Jordan Bills, Jordan Janke, Noah (Kristina) Rench, Anna Janke, William Altherr, and Audie Altherr. She was also blessed with twenty-five great-grandchildren, each of whom brought her immeasurable joy and pride.

Darlene's Catholic faith was the cornerstone of her life. She found comfort in prayer, strength in the sacraments, and regularly participated in the Rosary. She taught those around her the values of kindness, humility, forgiveness, and unconditional love through the quiet witness of her daily life.

Although her family grieves her passing, they rejoice in the promise of the Resurrection and the comfort of knowing she has been reunited with her beloved husbands, her son, and all those who have gone before her in faith. Her love, wisdom, and gentle spirit will continue to live on through her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all who were blessed to know her.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 28, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Feeney-Hornak Keystone Mortuary (Prayers of the Rosary at 3:30 p.m.). A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, July 29, at 11 a.m. at St. Matthew Catholic Church, with interment immediately following at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Northside Events & Social Club (2100 E. 71st St., Indianapolis) following Interment.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Altherr Family Endowed Fund at Cathedral High School in Darlene's memory.
