DAVID MICHAEL (‘MICK’) GUNN
Mick was born on October 11, 1941 in Noblesville, Indiana, the child of Virginia (Wibel) Gunn
and Wayne Gunn. The Gunn family roots go back generations in north-central Indiana. A road in
the Perkinsville area bears his great-grandfather’s name: Henry Gunn.
Mick attended Noblesville High School where he played basketball and was a part of the 1957
NHS Millers Regional Championship team, and 1958 and 1959 NHS Millers Sectional
Championship teams. He graduated in 1959 and that fall began attendance at Indiana
University, garnering a spot on the IU men’s basketball team as a walk-on. He was an IU
graduate and remained an avid IU Basketball fan throughout his life.
Shortly after his marriage to Mary Jane (Spindler) Gunn, Mick enlisted in the Army Medical
Service Corps and bravely served his country while stationed at the 6th Convalescent Center in
Cam Ranh Bay Vietnam. In May of 1969, Mick was awarded the Bronze Star Medal by the
President, in large part due to his quick and decisive actions while on night watch, when he
single-handedly defended his post, protecting the lives of the men under his command and the
soldiers recovering in the Convalescent Center hospitals. He subsequently proposed a
perimeter defense plan that was put into effect. Mick’s actions undoubtedly resulted in many of
his men making it back home safely, where they could start families and begin their lives anew.
Mick had a love of life and people that took him down many varied paths over the years,
including traveling about the United States and Europe. After being honorably discharged from
the service, Mick taught Practice Management at the School of Dentistry at the University of
Tennessee. He worked as a real estate agent and real estate broker in Hamilton County,
Indiana. Since he and Mary shared a love of antiques, their hobby led him to become a licensed
auctioneer.
Mary Jane (Spindler) Gunn, survives him and lives in Greenfield, Indiana. They spent 56 years
together, raising their two sons Bryan Charles Gunn and Steven Michael Gunn, who survive him
along with his granddaughter Kira, Steven’s daughter. Also surviving is his sister Cathi (Gunn)
Shure. He was a devoted husband, and a beloved father and grandfather. His friends are many
and span the country from Noblesville, Indiana to Divide, Colorado - where he and Mary made
their home for many years during their retirement
Mick will be missed by many, and fondly remembered by all. He passed peacefully at home on
July 16, 2020, at 78 years of age. His service and memorial are scheduled for October 9th at
Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis, where he will receive military honors and will be interred in
the Field of Valor. In lieu of flowers or gifts, Mick’s wish is for friends and family to make a
donation to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (www.vfw.org/donate).
