David went to F.J. Reitz High School in Evansville, Indiana and graduated in 1964.
He attended Indiana University in Bloomington and graduated in 1975 with a Bachelor’s Degree, majoring in Geography. He received his Master’s Degree from Charis Bible College in retirement.
After graduating from high school, David enlisted in the Navy and served on the USS Oriskany and the USS Coral Sea based out of San Diego, California. He was an Aviation Electronics Technician.
After the Navy, he came back to Indiana and worked for the State of Indiana for the Rural Development Department, which was a division of the Department of Commerce which was under Bob Orr, Lieutenant Governor at the time. He met his future wife, Sandra, while working for the state; a mutual friend of theirs told David she would be an invaluable resource for him as she worked for the Indiana State Library and she truly was invaluable because they married on October 23, 1976 at the Plainfield Friends Meeting Church. They had one son, Isaiah Thompson, born in 1978 and a stepdaughter, Andrea Reichard.
He was a Janitor at Lakeview Christian Church and retired from Federal Express.
In retirement, he and Sandi enjoyed traveling; they both loved going on cruises and took many wonderful trips together, Alaska, Hawaii and the Panama Canal to name a few.
David loved reading Louis L’Amour books and enjoyed doing puzzles.
He loved teaching people how to do things and if his kids needed him, he would drop everything to help.
David loved woodworking and made a beautiful rocker for his granddaughter. He also enjoyed gardening.
He loved to laugh (he had the best laugh) and loved the Three Stooges and the Muppets.
David had a heart for missions work and he met many wonderful friends during these trips. He loved Jesus and loved spreading the word of God. David was an active member of Life Church 180 and attended Lakeview Christian Church prior to joining Life Church 180.
David was so excited when he found out he was going to be a grandparent and he treasured spending time with his granddaughter, Hope. They had so much fun playing and their favorite activity was for him to chase her around the table.
He always ended his hospital visits with “I love you, Sandi”.
Their cat, Bubbles, really misses him. He was her person.
David is survived by his wife, Sandra Thompson, his son Isaiah Thompson, his stepdaughter, Andrea Reichard (husband James), his granddaughter, Hope Thompson, his siblings, Janet Davis (husband Dave), Larry Thompson (wife Judy), Ruth Ann Phillips (husband Ray) and many nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
David will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure to know and love him and his memory will live on in our hearts.
A visitation for David will be held Saturday, October 4, 2025 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Crown Hill Funeral Home, 700 W. 38th St., Indianapolis, IN 46208, followed by a Memorial Service at 1:00 PM.
