Donald Carl Agnew

Don was born on February 15, 1927, in Indianapolis to Esther Carlsen Agnew and Carl Agnew. Don had two sisters Elnora Jaynes and Helen Tackitt who preceded him in passing.

Don’s priorities in life were his faith, his family, and his friends. His marriage of almost 66 years to his high school sweetheart Shirley Ina Smotherman was one of deep devotion and love and provided a great model for his beloved children and grandchildren.

Don graduated from Washington High School where he was an athlete and active in student government leadership. After serving in the U.S. Army in Japan shortly after World War II ended, Don followed in his father’s footsteps with a long and successful career at American Fletcher National Bank, retiring as a vice-president. He then followed his passion for golf with a second career of thirty years at Old Oakland Golf Club. He enjoyed not only his job at the golf course, but his relationships with all the people who worked and played at the Club.

Don and his loving wife Shirley had four children, including two daughters who preceded him in passing – Donna Agnew Marsh and Linda Susan Agnew. Don and Shirley enjoyed countless, happy family times with their children Carla Shadiow (Rick) and Doug Agnew (Debbi, deceased), grandchildren Matthew Walkup (Stephanie), Brian Shadiow, and Scott Shadiow, and great-grandchildren Tyler Walkup and Nicolas Walkup.

Don and Shirley enjoyed visiting small towns and cities throughout Indiana, discovering and playing many beautiful golf courses and dining at local restaurants. They also created many unforgettable memories vacationing with friends and family. At home, they enjoyed beautifying their yard and had fun doing their own yard work.

Don accepted Jesus as his Savior as a young adult and was a long-time member and active in the ministries of Northside Baptist Church. A generous and humble man, he had a witty, thoughtful sense of humor, endearing him to many people throughout his life.

Don’s loyalty, work ethic, love of God and country, and his priorities in life leave a meaningful and unforgettable legacy to his friends and family.

In Don’s memory and honor, a celebration service will be held at Northside Baptist Church, 3021 E. 71st Street, Indianapolis, on Sunday, June 23, at 1:30 p.m. Appropriate golf attire is requested. Rather than receiving flowers, Don requested that donations be made to Northside Baptist Church B. J. Higgins Mission Fund. Friends may also donate in Don’s memory to the junior golf initiative, The First Tee of Indiana. Feeney-Hornak Keystone Mortuary is assisting with arrangements.
