Doris Faye Clark was born on November 30, 1949 in Minter City, Mississippi to Elizabeth and Nathaniel Goston. She was the youngest of two girls. Doris graduated from Amanda Elzy High School and went on to receive a degree in Business Administration from Jackson State College and a degree in Religion from Manchester College. At the young age of eight years old, Doris was baptized in the Baptist Church and at age 13, she served as the Sunday School Secretary. While in high school after visiting St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Doris was inspired to know her calling was to be of service to others. After moving to Indianapolis, Indiana she became a member of the United Methodist Church. Doris, a very active member, at University United Methodist Church served in various capacities in the church for over 40 years including: Children's Ministry, Young Adult Ministry, and the United Methodist Women. Doris was a person of action. She started the SKIP Ministry (Stop the Killing It's Permanent) after a teenaged church member was shot and killed. SKIP Ministry focused on stopping youth violence in the community. Additionally, Doris was instrumental in organizing and establishing other youth ministry programs, Young Lions and Daughters of Imani, at the church. One of her favorite sayings was, "Kids come to church to know God and we give them pizza."
After a long career at AT&T, she retired in 1999. Then, she began her service with Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, where she served as an Executive Director of a Lilly funded grant that served the needs of young people, which fueled her passion and love for working with the youth. She was able to lead various mission trips and service projects throughout the U.S. and in the Caribbean.
Doris loved to serve, and it was evident through her leadership in various capacities within the community, around the Indiana Conference, and in The United Methodist Church. She served as the past Chairperson of Metro Ministries, former Chairperson of the Central District's Committee on Ministry, a member of the Indiana Conference's Board of Ordained Ministry, a lay delegate to General and Jurisdictional Conference, a member of the General Commission on Religion and Race, and former member of The United Methodist Church's Connectional Table. Before her passing, Doris was the current Conference Lay Leader for the Indiana Conference.
While attending Jackson State, Doris met the love of her life, Stant Clark. They were married for almost 50 years and were the parents of one son, Anthony Orlando.
Doris leaves to cherish her memories: devoted husband, Stant Clark, loving son, Anthony Orlando (Kylie Groover), grandchild, Anthony, Jr., sister, Gracie Wellington (Calvin) and a host of other loving family and friends. Doris transitioned peacefully to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 27, 2019.
