Dovie Marie Carter, who was affectionately called “Ladybug” made her transition after a lifetime filled with love, laughter, and a few challenges. It’s difficult not to smile when thinking about Dovie because she was such a kind soul and she radiated such a positive vibe whenever she walked into a room. Dovie was born July 15,1966 to loving parents Elizabeth “Millie” Carter and William Carter who both preceded her in death. She also had a loving stepfather Elmore “Moe” Houston who preceded her in death. Ladybug’s free spirit and love of people was confirmation that life was created to be enjoyed.
Dovie Carter was raised in Chicago, IL. on the far south side in Altgeld Gardens, with her siblings Leslie, Elizabeth “Lil Momma,” William “Pumpkin,” and Eugene “Geno.” Her relationship with her siblings was remarkable. She would wrestle with her brothers, enjoy talking with her sister, and was known to dress like her brothers from time to time because they always had each other's backs. Her journey in this realm was so much sweeter because she knew that the love of family was life’s greatest blessing. Dovie attended Bethel House of Prayer, in Chicago’s Roseland neighborhood, faithfully with her cousin Donna. She loved attending church in her youth and inviting her neighborhood friends to attend with her..
Dovie was loved by many family members and friends, but her own love was magnified when she became a mother after meeting James Muhammad (James “Jimmy” Butler). Although they never married they maintained a strong friendship of love because of James’ promise to never abandon their children. She would never hesitate addressing James as “ The Best Baby Daddy in the WORLD !”
Although Dovie became a mother at a young age she adored motherhood because her children were her world. James III, Janita, and Janeane were loved and cherished from the moment they were conceived. She was very attentive to their needs and her sensitive spirit revealed itself any moment that her children cried, were ill, or in pain. Millie was very supportive of her daughter and was very instrumental in helping Ladybug raise her children.
Dovie had aspirations of one day becoming a nurse like her aunts. Although those dreams did not manifest, she was able to share her nurturing and caring spirit in the hospitality industry. Dovie worked at several hotels in Indianapolis, IN including the Marriott and Red Roof Inn. Her coworkers often became extended family and spoke very highly of her work ethic.
When she was younger, “Ladybug” was known and sought after for her hair braiding skills. She also loved decorating, party planning, music, dancing, and of course her favorite soap operas that she watched faithfully for 20 years.
Dovie’s spirit will live on in her children: James III, Janita ( Lawrence), Janeane ;grandchildren. : Jaela, Arther, LaDainian, Tishja, TeAsia, Nyhjin, and Zora: brother, Eugene, a host of aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins, devoted extended family, friends including her longtime partner, Joseph. In addition to her parents Dovie was preceded in death by her brothers Leslie & William, sister Elizabeth, and many other loving relatives.
One thing that should never be forgotten is that Dovie, “Ladybug,” had a heart of gold and a love for all that will transcend time and space. She never valued material possessions over people and was known to help so many “get back on their feet.” Her life's motto was to never value the things you have in your life, but instead value who you have in your life. Her life was never “rainbows and butterflies”, but she cherished every moment, even her most challenging ones.
Dovie understood that life was a brief gift from God and that it must be lived to the fullest. She touched so many lives and her presence, no matter how brief, was also a gift from God. Even during this intense time of sorrow she is teaching us all to recognize the value of a moment because we never know when it may become a memory.
The family of Dovie Carter will be present to receive friends, for visitation, Saturday, December 5, 2020, from 5-6 pm, at Williams and Bluitt Funeral Home Peoples' Chapel, 5252 E. 38th Street, Indianapolis, Indiana.
